Dan Den
Ok so it's like this a few minutes ago I was just watching X-men the anim then all of the sudden my PC shut down, I rebooted it then the unthinkable happened a window came up telling me that I have to restore my PC to the way it was when I first got it. I have allot of important data in here and I'd hate to lose it.But it did tell me to back up my data, here's where I need your help. I really have no idea how I go about backing up/extracting my old data. Here are some screen shots of what messages it displays, sorry for the quality but I can't find my camera. RikuoAmero
Umm...the first spoiler you have up there is empty, it doesn't show anything for me.As for your important data, I assume you put up this thread using a different computer? And I also assume your hard disk isn't encrypted in any way? If so...1) Download a linux live-cd .iso and burn it. Try getting Ubuntu. Just google for the .iso.2) Once you have your cd, pop it in and turn on your computer. Immediately go into the BIOS and see if you can find an option that lets you boot from the disc drive.3) Once you've booted into linux, you should have the ability to get at any unecrypted files and transfer them to a thumb drive. In fact, this guide is better, it has pictures and everything, so ignore what I've written above.http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/
Dan Den
Ok so far I've almost finished downloading the Ubuntu Live CD but I just have some questions. Will this work on a Windows 7 OS?If I'm correct the first thing I have to do is unzip the file then burn it as an .iso file right? Install ImgBurn and burn it...make sure you're not burning as a data CD, it'll be pretty much useless if the CD just contains a .iso file. What you'll be doing is burning the contents of the .iso file to the CD, which ImgBurn will do for you without you having to open it up. Yes, if the .iso is inside a zip file, take it out.I read it myself, and its pretty thorough. And you have to understand, you're not going to be using your Windows 7 OS: this is an entirely different OS. So Windows won't be loaded at all. I will let you know how things turn out tomorrow, since I have to buy a new hard disk in order to store all the data I'm going to collect from there. Thanks so far. Xanodus
If you get the pictures back up I think i may be able to solve your problem. You see, by what I am reading, the exact same thing just happened to me a few hours ago. Also; that's why I store all my important shit on my USB and flashdrives ;

If you can, see if you can get two 1TB drives for the same price as one 2TB. That way, if one dies, you've only lost 1TB worth of data, not 2. I currently have 4 external drives (1 TB, 1.5 TB, and two 2 TB drives), not counting my internal drives of all my PC's (one of which is over 10 years old). With that said.. I've actually never had a game console die either. As with pretty much everything.. it lasts as long as you take care of it well. Most of the problems with stuff dying is the owners fault of mishandling it.

Other than that nothing else has ever happened. And plus the one I want to get, if I go for the 2 1TB it will be more expensive than if I just get a 2TB. With that said.. Most of the problems with stuff dying is the owners fault of mishandling it.The same goes here, nothing of mine has ever died other than my new PC, I take care of my tech like it's a new born baby. Anything of mine that has damaged has been cause of either friends thinking they can fix a PSP or my little sister and her juice box.
ZeroPenguins
Why use ubuntu? It has problems with newer GPUs (I can't load it, freezes on bootscreen), use Linux Mint and don't even bother burning the disk. Might as well boot from your usb, it will save you a CD. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ <--- easy way to make your usb bootable. After that you should be able to load locate your HDD and backup your data.

Had old computers and none never died or go out on me, unless it was me being stupid and deleting masterboot record/BCD.

Dan Den
Alright Amero and Darkness, thanks for the help I really apreciate it I got all my data back and it feels great that I didn't have to go and spend a hell of allot of paper just for those idiots to tell me that this is going to be a hard and tricky job while it just took me a few hours to get my data out and reboot my PC so yeah thanks dudes. And Darkness I think I'll use that USB method on my other PC since I'm out of DVD-RW's and I have to re-download the 32bit version since the PC I used it on was 64bit.
