Anyone feel like a mainstream gamer?

I feel like I'm a main-stream gamer. I'll admit it. The only games that I get that goes out are pretty much the latest and greatest games that are going out there on the market and that is advertised so much that pretty much everyone knows about it. I'll admit that I'm a main-streamer when it comes to gaming, but I wanted to see if anyone else would admit that with me.

Nope, as far as I'm concerned the "latest and greatest" suck 90% of the time. It's all about graphics and online play now. Nobody seems to care for things like unique gameplay and engaging original stories. I miss the era of the PS1... Oh well... LONG LIVE THE INDIE GAME MARKET! Their lack of resources means they pretty much HAVE to do something unique to sell their game. They're the ones who are really trying now. The big companies are too busy shoveling out more of the same blah cause they have the money and resources to get away with it. Their games don't have to be good they just have to sound and look good so that people will buy them.

I wouldn't really consider myself a mainstream gamer because I don't buy exactly everything that comes out (otherwise I'd be piss-poor broke all the time.) I find that I search for games or look for promising upcoming titles. There are quite a few that have got me interested via trailers but not much more than that. All the more power to the decision when it comes to demos and preview gameplays.

I don't think I am, the majority of games I play are really old and were probably released before I was even born, I grew with really old Pc and Snes games and I find that I enjoy them more than a lot of the newer games that come out, I play a lot of mainstream games but I play even more games that no one in my age group really even knows about.

Not really, no. While I play SOME mainstream games, I'm not obsessed with getting "that over hyper game that's gonna be so super special awesome cuz they showed 7 trailers of it at the E3".

In fact, my favorite games are made by a company called NIS America (Nippon Ichi Software) which makes really innovative and original games but don't really get the kind of attention they deserve.

Honestly? I'm not sure. There are one or two titles that I buy sequels for fairly regularly, and I'm a Rockstar fanboy, so I'll get almost anything by them, but besides that I really don't get taken in by big names or flashy advertising. Honestly, I usually wait a few months to a year for a price drop before I spend money on most games so I can usually gather enough information by then. That said, I'm not even sure what is considered mainstream in gaming, so I may end up buying all those games, but who knows.

I think we might have some mainstream gamers hiding among us, haha. Even indie games have their own stream, given the media attention they've garnered over time. Some people even worry the indie market is getting as stagnant as the mainstream market. These sound like the concerns of people who have nostalgia goggles on.

But most seem to be these obnoxiously artsy/casual puzzle games/platformers made by hipsters that are nowhere near as appealing as the platformers of 20 years ago or so made by professionals, like Super Mario Bros, say.

All things considered, I think I'm more of a Slowpoke gamer, haha. Due to budget constraints and interest constraints, I don't snatch up games very quickly and I play them for long periods of time. Because I don't like FPS, though, a lot of AAA games go over my head due to a lack of interest. But I'll eventually pick up a game like Skyrim to see what the fuss is about, I'll buy all the Sims games (not the stuff packs) because I have an addiction, and I'll happily give most any RPG, strategy or otherwise, a try.
