Yeah, I think he still lived. I mean, he represented something that can't go away... though I'm not sure what it was. The entire ending of FFIX didn't make much sense at all to me. I guess they were trying to pull in more references to previous games with the Crystal and stuff... but it was more confusing than anything else.

Necron is the true form of the Lifa Tree.

When Kuja uses the ultima spell on your party, you lose consciousness and wake up in a new place. This would mean you died (or some sort of magical spell.) and came face to face with Necron in some sort of Spirit world. When you killed Necron, you destroyed the Lifa Tree straight after and finished the game.

This is a theory that has not been proven.

I haven't played the game in quite awhile, but I remember Necron being somewhat difficult to fight. He was rather annoying. I think he was like the Guardian of everything wasn't he? I mean, the crystal represented life and existance, blah blah, and without it, everything would be nothing. So Kuja wanted to destory the Crystal in order to destory existance, Gaia, Terra, and the rest of the universe, after Kuja casts the spell and you awaken, Necron is there to fight you.

I think Necron was ready to destroy existance and start over with everything, but when you defeat him, he restores everything to it's natural state of being. So I don't think he died, you just defeat him.
