I have a SeaGate 500GB portable hard drive and my computer's hard disk is only 90 GB (All drives combined) so i store all the anime on my portable harddrive and it is connected to my pc 24/7 so i wanted to ask will this reduce its life??

i sometimes end up doing computer for around 12 hours and i have to keep it connected as almost all my data is in it so is this safe????

One of my externals stores a lot of my files and thus is constantly plugged it and has been for over three years. I only ever shut my computer down in case of storms, going on vacation trips, or needing to restart it. So pretty much the HHD is always on and it still works fine.

As I understand it, the two main things that can reduce the lifespan of spinning drives besides random mechanical or electrical failures are physical shock and thermal cycling. If your external is on your desk try not to bump into it or shake the desk while it is running. Heat is usually less of an issue unless the drive is getting up around 140F. External drives are almost exactly the same as internal drives so they are no more or less likely to fail from being left on all the time. I have a 160Gb internal drive that has been running fine 24x7 for almost seven years now but I have also had several newer drives fail.

All hard drives do fail eventually so make sure you have backups of your important data.

Speaking of Random Mechanical or electrical failures... My 2TB external just bit the dust about an hour ago.... I essentially lost 1.5 TB's of Anime and a bunch of games....

It's in case of something like this that I burn all my stuff as back-up in 'data' format to discs.

I did up until I got my new drive... I never had any problems with the old one... Stupid me I guess...

Not too big a deal, My brother has about 85% of my anime collection(just a guess)... and the games arn't that big a loss... Most of them were small and I have them all bookmarked... So, I just need to save back a little cash and get a new drive...

Well... Out of boredom, I have started going through my Anime Backups from before I got my External... Just looking for something to watch while I re-Download some of the Anime that was waiting to be watched on said External Drive.... I'd say I have Half maybe less but nearly half right here sitting in Spindals... I have all of the Gundam series Minus Unicorn... Which I'm starting to order on DVD anyway...

I Think I'll start with Darker than black...

on another note... Anyone in KC wanna go to the burial? I'll be throwing my External drive in the dumpster tomorrow. Anyone is welcome to watch... It'll only take a minute...
