† Apollo
A friend showed me this the other day. Just as the title says, it's a huge, funny list of rpg clichés. I enjoyed the hell out of it, so I wanted to share this with you guys over here.http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.htmlEnjoy, and feel free to post which ones you like best! Koby
You should probably check out 'The Bard's Tale' for Playstation 2. It pretty much makes a mockery of all the RPG cliches. I haven't played it but I've watched a lot of it on youtube and it's damn hilarious. Especially the part where he goes to vanquish the rats in the cellar, gets caught on fire by a giant rat, runs back to the tavern on fire, everyone laughing their ass off, then he argues with the narrator.2-JVnbyIr04XmBI7ycLxmU

Dude888
most of them were true, and it was funny.thanks for sharing Apollo.176. "Evil will always triumph, because Good is dumb!"I think they do that because they're trying to hide them where the villain won't look.
nemarious
It's nice for me when reading this list that I can tick off in my head:"No, haven't done that in Primus." or "No, that's not the case for Primus."Makes me feel good as a game designer. The ones that do exist in Primus are:The rule about characters not having a last name (7).The one about the obligatory dungeon settings but that is down to limitations in tiles for RPG Maker (9).The one about you looting through peoples' houses (14).The one about obligatory NPCs (17).The one about the main female character using a wand or staff (21).The one about shops instantly reselling stuff (24). There's no script that allows buyback The one about building being bigger on the inside (25).The one about villains being able to randomly teleport (34). You can do it too though in game. The one about technology not being traded. (44) My countries have varied backgrounds. Ehatia is a technological powerhouse focusing on mainly scholarly things whereas Alydra has a strong manufacturing background and was the first country to become a democracy for example. The one about your party being the only people trying to save the world (59). To be fair they don't realize what they're doing in Primus...The one about there only being one way to go through a range of mountains (67).The one about everything trying to kill you (74). That's just random encounters for you. Would you prefer to fight the same slime mob over and over? The one about hidden passages (84). Everyone loves hidden goodies, right? The one about people asking questions with only one answer (92). These are mostly story related questions. Non important questions always have multiple outcomes in my games. The one about NPCs saying the same thing over and over (93).The one about characters only wearing one set of clothes (128).The one about all items having a use no matter how seemingly useless (167). *Cough* Trade chain quest *cough*The one about all locked doors being unlockable (175). You just have to find the right key The one about villains having multiple forms (187). Only one a superboss in Primus will do this, not the end boss. The one about the ridiculous bosses giving you weapons that are useless by the time you're strong enough to defeat said boss (190). The Vetus Doors in Primus have uber dungeons for you to complete after the main story. So, out of a list of 192 things Primus will achieve only 20. I don't think that's too bad. A cliched rating of 9.6%. I'm quite happy with that.
lemmingllama
Dimensional Transcendence PrincipleBuildings are much, much larger on the inside than on the outside, and that doesn't even count the secret maze of tunnels behind the clock in the basement. This is always freaking true. Or the opposite, where a castle is like 6 rooms large
nemarious
Dimensional Transcendence PrincipleBuildings are much, much larger on the inside than on the outside, and that doesn't even count the secret maze of tunnels behind the clock in the basement. This is always freaking true. Or the opposite, where a castle is like 6 rooms largeIn general I try to make my buildings a rough size they would be in games. For example, Alydra Castle, the first to be encountered in Primus is going to have multiple floors, big long hallways etc because that's how it is mapped outside in game; it looks like a big castle with looming towers and stuff. The least I try to do with buildings is have them the same shape inside. It often annoyed me with other RPG Maker games when someone has made an L shaped building from the outside yet it only has one square shaped room inside; that just makes no sense. There are size limitations that can often result in maps needing to be made smaller which could explain them not being the same size.
Monad-Gnostis
It was fantastic, you just found gold m'boy, wich is very good to use with armour weapons and other things.
nemarious
It was fantastic, you just found gold m'boy, wich is very good to use with armour weapons and other things. Then why does Goldor die so quickly in FF3 Lol, besides that gold is ridiculously heavy and therefore impractical for use as weapons and armour. I've made up my own metals for Primus, although they do have some real world inspiration. There is gold in game but like in real life this is mostly used in conjunction with other metals to make rings and other such jewellery. Some swords use it as an inlay as well but there is no Gold Sword.
lemmingllama
You can easily add an unlockable door in some random house where theres some NPC saying comic relief stuff. Then you drop another cliche off your list and it adds a fun easter egg

Then you drop another cliche off your list and it adds a fun easter eggLol. I've thought about loads of easter eggs. I want to try and get as many anime references in as possible seen as the game is hosted on a (mostly) anime focused forum. There's a forest kingdom called Daralas so I'm sure I can get DWMA in there somewhere but other than that I haven't really been able to think of anything. Anyone that has been reading my development log will know Koby will be making an appearance in all my games and will also know of the references to Square and Enix. Maybe I'll have said house and have a guy called lemmingllama in it that just .

You could also set the game music in the house to be that song without the lyrics. Just throwing out suggestions but i would love to be in your game

Just throwing out suggestions but i would love to be in your gameLol. I could do a lot of things, maybe find or make a llama sprite and have them dancing around at the same time... Only problem with stuff like this is that rpg maker can only compress games to a size of 128mb for some reason so I'm trying to limit excess images and music. If I can fit it in it'll be there, you'll have to try to find it
Gurvir
I've just realized how a lot of RPG's Ive played fit this.
Jarlaxle
Funny stuff, and very accurate in many parts. The Bard's Tale is definitely the King of taking the piss out of RPG cliches. It is far past time someone else made a like-minded title on the current consoles. It's actually surprising that there aren't a heap of them, given how they love to do that sort of thing in the movie industry with their countless spoof movies of every genre. >_<
