Why is One piece so popular

*sigh* These guys just never stop, do they? I wonder how many more times i'll have to say it before they finally get it – DON'T JUDGE IT BY THE CRAPPY 4KIDS DUBS!!!

Those dubs were crap! The edits and translations made by that company ruined the crap out of an otherwise great anime! I'm all for listening to criticisms about One Piece as long as :-

a) they are logical and are made by someone who has seen either the uncut FUNimation dubs or watched the subs.

B) they don't talk about the “weird” animation style that makes everyone look ugly and doesn't have a fanservice scene every 10 seconds.

If you were able to watch Naruto and Bleach easily, then i can't help but wonder why you can't watch One Piece which is a million times better in a million ways. I'm not just saying that as a fan, here are some of those reasons:-

a) BETTER FILLER MANAGEMENT. Check this thread if you don't believe me – http://forums.kametsu.com/showthread.php?t=15185. I calculated the statistics very carefully and you're welcome to verify it if you want. One Piece is one of the few long anime you can watch without being side-tracked by random, dry fillers all the time,

B) STEADY PACE. It takes it slow and steady. It's about travelling to different islands which are all unique. The author draws out these contrasting features of different islands, constructs a map of it and then uses every detail in his story to give the best possible experience.

c) REAL EMOTIONS. You'd think that 'cause a guy can stretch his arm, this would be more like a cartoon, right? Wrong. This anime focuses on the emotions of characters more than any other anime around. These are REAL people, who react to certain situations like a REAL person would. They would feel and exhibit strong emotion when someone close to them died.

d) UNIQUENESS. There are not the same characters with the same powers bull-shiting and talking all the time. There are various fruits all over the world called “Devil Fruits” which give a certain power to the guy who ate it. There can only be ONE Devil-Fruit User of a particular fruit at a time. Also, EVERY character has certain goals or dreams that they wish to accomplish for which reason, they've decided to accompany Luffy on his journey.

e) CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. All characters grow stronger and develop their personalitites over time. It's not like everytime Luffy has to come barging and save everyone from the great huge Final Boss. EVERYONE can hold their own in a battle. The Alabasta Arc is the first instance of this when the entire Straw-Hat crew has to participate in a battle against the enemy.

Now, i've said all i wanted. You asked why you should watch it? The only answer i have is this - “CUZ ITS FRIGGING AWESOME!”

Now, obviously an answer like that won't fly with everyone, so i'll add this neutral reason - “One Piece is an anime filled with unique and colorful characters, which can interact like real people. It provides entertainment as an anime-style pirate crew sails the seas in search for a grand treasure. The protagonist is simple-minded and loyal, 2 characteristics that eventually come to describe everything about him.”

That's the only other answer i can offer. After watching 15-20 episodes of it, if you still wanna diss on it, fine by me.

But, don't ASSUME it to be a bad anime just cuz you've seen the 4Kids dubs. Those suck ... big time.

I think animation style is a valid way of judging an anime. I mean, don't get me wrong, it shouldn't be the only way. The most beautiful anime could be the most boring. A prettier style doesn't make for interesting characters, good music, or a fantastic plot. But surely looks are a normal part of a person's criteria for judging anime, and so it's normal to comment on an anime's style, right?

Iki mentioned he doesn't like when people talk about the style of One Piece, so I was just curious why.

The animation style isn't "bad" per say. it's just "different" compared to most anime you see today cuz this one got started back in 1999 and up until episode 206, it's done mainly by "hand-drawing" whereas afterwards, it adopts the newer cel-shading technique.

However, most people are quickly disappointed by the lack of "fanservice" in it and they dismiss it as a "cartoon for kids".

so, most of the time, i hear the argument - "that show looks like it's been made by 7 year olds. Must be for kids." and it really gets on my nerves. if you watch it, and i mean REALLY watch it, with interest, you'll see that it's actually one of the most "beautiful" anime out there with a wide colorful range of characters with different personalities.

we all have different opinions about different things, so are the characters in one piece... they may have diverse personality and they clash but who cares, that's the reality in life... the emotions are so real though the acts may not, but in the end it is the story that counts

Wow! That was very well said. I think this is the best answer for this question I've ever seen. The best I can ever come up with is "CUZ ITS FRIGGING AWESOME!" ^^'

One piece is a really great and deep anime. FIghting or not, It still tells you right from wrong and makes you emotional. As the series goes on it will start to get better. People complain saying that the characters look too childish or something. I really dont care otherwise. Whatever people say about one piece, bad or not, I defenitely want you to give one piece a second chance.
