† ballard
I'm not sure how to explain this so please forgive me if it comes out wrong ...One of my external hard drives got messed up some how and it's in raw format now. I'd reformat it, but I have so much anime and movies on it that I really want to try and recover it before I wipe it. Do you guys know any programs I could use to get the data off the hard drive? NickthePwn3r
Well if its been put back to raw format, that unfortunately mean that any data that you had on their is probably now gone. Unless you know for a fact that there is no data on there you should simply reformat. Lemme know if there is still data on there, with proff too, not being mean but it will better help me help you
† Irish
ill give you a command line example of what you should put in, note dont put eh letter e, instead put whatever letter your drive is.Convert E: /fs:ntfstry that... if that doesnt work, i would try to ghost backup your drive... *norton Ghost Backup*
† ballard
Unfortunately the convert command didn't work. It says "CONVERT is not available for RAW drives."I'll try out ghost backup and let you know if it works.@Nick I know for sure that all my data is still on the hard drive. † L4ugh
You could also try a data recovery program. I would give you some names but I'm afraid I'm looking at a crashed hd myself, and most all my apps and stuff were on it. There are some open source options out there, and the good ones will tell you how good the chances are of you being able to recover each file. I don't think you will get the files back with the same names you had them marked as though. If I can get mine to even spin up tomorrow I'll try to make sure those folders are some of the first I go after, but don't hold your breath. I really should of been smart enough to now to back that stuff up.
Asch
A raw hdd is nothing but partition schema removed, to recover it, you need the exact one that the hdd was using before, converting the filesystem is not an option, cause windows treat a raw filesystem as a nullified space, thus requiring you to reformat it to a known scheme[which is not possible here] . I am not too sure that this will work , but any of the nix[uNIX or Linux] has a nice partition recovery and editing facility build in to it[core console], you can try that. † ballard
Do you think Ubuntu would do the job? I have a spare hard drive I could put it on, and I'm more than willing to sacrifice whatever files are on that specific drive. I just want my external drive to be recovered because I have years of anime and movies collected onto it. It would take me so long to get it all back.@L4ugh I really feel for you man. I hate dealing with hard drive issues. Especially when there are important files on it. I had a bunch of pictures and documents on this hard drive that I can't replace.I'll be researching this matter more deeply when I get home tonight. I'll post my findings here. † L4ugh
Well my HD seems to have decided it's just fine now. Don't know if it was a virus, or what, but it's booting up like nothing ever happened. The data recovery programs that I was looking for are Recuva and Testdisk. Recuva is from the same people as ccleaner and tells you the chances of retrieving the file. Testdisk is a command line tool but is suppose to be pretty powerful.
