JohnFlower
You seemed to breeze right past laptop vs desktop... Do you need this machine to be portable? If not then a custom build desktop will offer the best performance:price ratio.

HeavenlyClassic
portability is unnecessaryfrom the videos ive been watching it seems an "i5" would be idealand 8-16ramlastly 64bit over 32bit so i think going the build yourself route is indeed bestjust need assistance on parts to purchase :]as its quite confusing and my biggest need is to have it not overheat almost at all

No you would've lost so much money, you would had lost negative $300-500, so therefore in the end you made a profit. -Some food for thought for you... undertehker
portability is unnecessary from the videos ive been watching it seems an "i5" would be ideal and 8-16ram lastly 64bit over 32bit so i think going the build yourself route is indeed best just need assistance on parts to purchase :] as its quite confusing and my biggest need is to have it not overheat almost at all Be careful not to overspend on parts that you may not need (example: 8-16gb of ram is a little excessive.) Take a look at your games' recommended hardware requirements. That'll help some.
Tanis
Unless you're going to be doing things like video editing, 8GB is MORE than enough RAM.

It still doesn't compare to a proper PC built from scratch, assuming you get those parts on sale. Even if you brought those parts retailed price, you do have the peace of mind knowing you're gonna get better quality parts. Not to be hating, but if you want to talk about equalvalent parts comparing OEMs parts with custom PC parts is like comparing apples with oranges. Just facts man. Moodkiller
I didn't read all the comments afterwards, but I would look at getting a powerful PSU, at least a 600W+. MSI's recommended power supply for the 970 is 500W, although they state the card only uses 145W, if that was the case then MSI would have recommended a 200W PSU instead.
