Dude888
I'm a guy and I play both. Mostly because I want to see if the game feels differently or if the developers included other options when you play as the other sex. What is kind of weird is that most of my female characters are evil. There is a totally understandable reason. I mostly start with a "good guy" character, because it's what I am in life, not too good, but I make the choices I would have made if I was in this situation. My second character is a female and, as I said, I want to see everything the game has to offer, so I make mostly the evil/bad choices.

I mean I understand the annoyance, but personally I know a couple of my friends who when they play their games they are their characters for that point in time. They refuse even to acknowledge their real name when stated online. For some people that level of immersion is what they are seeking from the game in the first place.

So not every male who plays a female is pathetic, just the ones who try to use that to scam people and troll
Minkseru
that however was not necessarily the statement, but yes there are people who do the same on mmos because it is their outlet to express their wish to be female, or vice versa, Always find it odd when people have problems with guys roleplaying as girls, but not the other way around. Would I necessarily agree with it, probably not, but I perceive everyone as they try to portray themself.
†Emotional Outlet
There's a line between roleplaying/immersion and just outright lying to garner attention or curry favour. There was an image floating around from one of the chans--the story goes the guy was pretending to be a hot, hot lesbian and ran into another hot, hot lesbian, so they would cyber hot, hot lesbian sex. This carried on for several months until the other lesbian says she wants to meet up and tell the (fake) lesbian something. And then it turns out they were both males cybering lesbian sex for well over six months. Hilarity ensued. My roommate plays Second Life on a regular basis and always has stories about players he encounters whose avatars are ridiculously buxom women whose mating call seems to be "Sorry boys, I only like girls" and that's all they do in the game.I don't think it's meant to be a dig against people who are trans* or otherwise outside of the gender binary. It does remind me of this Madonna song.[media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYwgG2oyUbAGirls can wear jeans // And cut their hair short // Wear shirts and boots // 'Cause it's okay to be a boy // But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading // 'Cause you think being a girl is degrading
Minkseru
I could see that being a valid issue then. Just never ran into this problem.
Alice
i do it all the time as i put it to all my friends and shit ask your gf this if you had a choice as a woman to stare at a mans ass or a womans ass which would you pick the man's right? the smae with me id rather stare at the womans ass then a mans especially if theres no difference between class typesI completely agree with that. There isn't anything wrong with a guy playing a female character. Most guys don't want to stare at a man's backside. Eye-candy would be much easier to stare at for a guy. I certainly don't hold it against Mink for playing a female character.

Minkseru
I am very glad I don't get looked at wierdly for playing a female character, sadly as the wife pointed out when making my characters for Guild Wars 2, it is much easier to make a female character look good. FoxesDen
In a game with nice graphics, I think any guy playing a male character instead of female is either gay (which is fine of course), or too young to really appreciate the opposite sex properly lol. (Which again is fine!) Of course a guy might be roleplaying as well and thus choose a male character.I'm pretty sure that when I was 12 I would've rather played a male character and imagine being some tough hulking warrior type. But the only reason I'd play a male now is if it's my only choice, or there's something to be gained by it.
†Emotional Outlet
Or, like, a person wants to play as a male character because they like the stats better?? It's been mentioned before that stats related to speed and dexterity tend to be weighted in favour of females--if a person wants to play as a tank and bowl their way through the game, if the male character's stats are weighted towards that, why not? Or maybe the game has multiple classes but fixed sexes for the characters and they'd rather play as a certain class that happens to be a male character. Because they don't like the class the female character was given. It doesn't have to be about the player's sexuality or age, haha.My play style in fighting games is to mash desperately until the battle is over, which means I generally prefer lighter, faster characters over the heavier, slower characters--generally I end up playing as females most times, because the male characters don't respond as quickly to my "commands". For someone who knows what they're doing, however, they might enjoy playing the heavier characters more, particularly if they're into the whole tier thing. †Mute point
Pixels aren't people. Having a sexual attraction to your character, regardless of gender is weird. Don't agree? Tough, it's how I feel. I play whatever gender I have a backstory for. Usually that would be a female. In STO I made my first character look as much like me as I could within the limits of the character creation system (other than hair color, height, and borg implants of course.)I have a few male characters. One of which is gay, one is a pacifist, and one is a bloodthirsty lunatic werewolf who has a fascination with collecting skins from anyone and anything the game will allow. (Gay: Night elf Deathknight. Pacifist: Night elf druid. Lunatic: Worgen hunter.) When in character, anything is possible, and nothing is forbidden. (Within the bounds of the game world of course.) FoxesDen
@Emotional Outlet - That's why I said, "or there's something to be gained by it." But I was being facetious more than anything, in my support of males playing female characters. @Mute point - Just pixels? Gah, I gotta disagree when people say that. Fantasy characters can be a lot more sexy than the real thing, and they will always be drawn or pixels. But of course we live in a diverse world with a diverse range of people and tastes. The world would be pretty boring if we all felt the same way about everything! Edited October 9, 2012 by FoxesDen
†Mute point
I have never seen any fictional character, in any rendering format, that was genuinely sexier than a real person. I could understand it if it was a case of "If she was real she'd be hot!" But people who are actually attracted to the character as is on screen? I don't see the allure.
Dark_Angel13
I love how one of you said ppl who are male and play male characters must be gay or have not yet noticed women...I could not laugh harder at how stupid that sounded, no offense but like Mute said, you shouldn't really be attracted to your character, it's kinda creepy especially if you're over the top with it and you just stare at her ass the entire time or her breasts. To think that a guy must be gay cause he plays a male character is just stupid, like EO and Mute said, some ppl like to be themselves in a game and roleplay or they just prefer the male because he's a heavy hitter over the female, though in some games females can be just as strong as the male characters.I play males and females, it's not about attraction it's about enjoying the game to it's full extent. In Skyrim I have both male and fem characters, that doesn't mean I stare at their arse's or the guys hairy chest and drool. You seem to assume that everyone is attracted to in game characters so they should play the opposite gender which again is stupid. No offense in all of this, just my opinion
FoxesDen
You're mean lol. No offense taken, but I did say, "I was being facetious more than anything, in my support of males playing female characters." And yes there is a point where it can creepy, but not admitting an anime or game character is hot because he/she isn't real is silly too.
Dark_Angel13
Lol not mean, honest . I realise what you said but I was just voicing my opinion on your words. A lot of ppl reach the creepy point very quickly when playing games, the worst thing is hearing it over a chat when you're co oping or when a mate says something and you have to give them that WTF DUDE face lol
Vigilence
Not weird at all. Whats weird is that it seems to bother some people for some odd reason.
