Baka
I'm writing an evaluative essay on anime conventions for my A.P. English III class. I need YOUR opinion on whether or not anime conventions are good or bad. Please do not just simply vote in the poll, I would greatly appreciate your input, please tell me why you voted good or bad. Also if you vote good or bad but feel it leans the other way at some point please tell me that as well, I greatly appreciate any help you can give me.Much love,~Baka
lemmingllama
I would say that anime conventions are a great thing. Although all the goods sold there are normally overpriced, you can still find new series to watch and meet other people that are interested in the same things that you are. Also, its lots of fun to find good cosplayers, and sometimes you can also hear interesting talks with voice actors or creators of animes/mangas if its a big one. All in all, lots of fun and helps produce wealth for the companies so good thing

wyattearp23
I find them to be fun to attend, being able to dress up as your favorite character and just be yourself. See all the other sweet cosplay characters and meeting new people. Meet some cool new friends attending them. Also being able to meet with the voice actors and find out about upcoming series and new mangas coming out. Conventions are awesome. I do agree with lemmingllama however though about the overpriced merchandise but there still fun to attend.

batosi07
Conventions are a good thing. It allows for the evolution of the anime culture in the same way that any other fan convention would for its specific purpose. It allows fans to find anime related items that they would not normally find, and also allows people to meet others with similar interests. It is also a good way to network if a person wishes to enter the industry. Sure anime cons do have a notorious "dark side" but in reality the crime rate at cons is lower than the crime rate in society (though drug rates may be higher). If a person does not want to be part of the "culture" they simply don't attend the cons. In short cons are a form of entertainment, and unless you use it as a shopping spree then it is cheaper then a lot of other forms of entertainment such as concerts and sporting events

†Koga
Conventions are awesome! I'm not too big a fan of panels unless its 18+ because then it gets wild. But there's so many people to meet there that have the same interests as you. Seeing people cosplay it great too. You get to see some really good ones...but also some fails....which can be a bit funny. Meeting guests is also cool if you get the chance. I think anyone who like anime or video games should attend. But if you are a parent of a daughter who's underage.....man..I feel sorry for YOU! how some of them act and/or dress is so.......trashy. Plus they are underage. WTF am I gonna do with them? *Tosses a coin at one of them*
Xanodus
Anime conventions rock! Even if the amout of people who attend them is limited, it is well worth going to a convention. You get to meet and talk to people who share the same interest as you, buy merchandise such as manags, DVD's, OST's and albums, T-Shirts, books etc., and even get the chance to meet and get an autograph from anime and manga stars! Also there at the convention are hard-working cosplayers who have gone to the effort of putting together a cosplay costume. How can you not love anime conventions?=)
tridentgum
Anime conventions are super fun! (Well, maybe not if you're claustrophobic.) It's always nice to see how far fans go for cosplaying and they might even be inspirations for others. Of course, it's also a good way to meet new people, whether it be someone who happens to be dressed as a character from your favorite anime, a person you meet in line for purchasing merchandise, or just a random person you bump into! Kidnap your friend and take them to an anime convention and they'll leave converted, hehehe.

lemmingllama
I am amused by the fact that noone has really dissed anime conventions. Ok, heres something thats wrong with them. The people. You may be a great person, but that fat sweaty guy dressed in the sailor moon uniform is just as much of anime fan as you are. Now there are hundreds of them and you need to force your way through them to see each thing. Not so fun now, eh? And you see a hot Kallen and head on over. Bam, another dude...I do like conventions, just that we also have to get some negative stuff in here too.

It's hard to say anime conventions are bad though, especially on an anime based forum. Thank you for this input!~~Baka
Nienna
I attend about 4-5 three day conventions and 6-8 single day conventions a year. (Almost one a month.) Most are Anime related (some are more anime and some are more sci-fi/fantasy) I host panels at about half of the conventions I attend. So I feel I have good perspective on conventions as a whole.Conventions themselves are not good or bad. Depending on a number of factors, a convention can be a wonderful experience where you make new friends and learn new things or it can be a straight up nightmare. Most of this has to do with the people who run the convention. Not the people attending it. Sure, there are days when I think if I see one more girl in a duck tape bikini I'm going to go blind but the times I've felt like a convention was a waste of my money have only been when the convention was poorly managed. I always recommend before attending a convention to get online and see what other people are saying about it, get on the convention forums and try to connect with the community ahead of time. This will give you a good idea how involved the staff are and what to expect. If it's a small convention don't be afraid to contact the staff directly and ask them about the convention and the types of activities they have planned and see what kind of response you get. Event staff should be helpful and enthusiastic. Good staff will make a great convention experience.
