MaskedX
I am not a novice when it comes to Tech but man this is complicated. I just want to take my 1TB usb drive plug it into something and watch my videos on TV. Here is what I have tried:I have 2 Xbox's but they dont support the drive even in FAT and if it did they don't support MKV.I know I can boot up the PC and stream it to the xbox but still wont play MKV. This leads to my next variable. I don't want to use a computer. If I wanted to use a computer I would use a computer but I want to sit back and just enjoy video not fiddle with tech to make it work. So here is my question to you folks. How do you enjoy your content?
renovalentine
Hmm unusual that the drive is unsupported even when formatted in FAT32 what drive is it mine is a portable 1TB Western digital which i have partitioned so only part of it is FAT32 for use with my 360/PS3. But I have a LG LED TV which has a usb port. The TV also supports NTFS formating and plays most file formats including MKV
Koby
I enjoy my content via my computer. My PC monitor is the same size as my TV. Though I do occasionally hook up one of my PC's to my TV through the PC port my TV has. However if I don't feel like doing that then I copy the video to one of my flash drives and plug it in the usb port of my PS3 and watch it on my TV.I don't know why your 360 doesn't support a flash drive, but I know PS3 does, and you can also stream MKV's to a PS3. biggman15
I usually use my PC. But I'll use my Zune HD to plug into my Television when I really want to. But that also requires so re-encoding to mp4. which is why I still prefer my PC... You could try some of the advanced Media players that have come to the market. Here's one that appears to require some form of usb Memory...http://www.slashgear.com/wd-tv-media-player-does-1080p-and-plays-mkv-0321235/My local best Buy carries something like this one... It has a Built in 1TB hard drive and does all kinds of streaming alongside local content supposedly including MKV. but I would research these things thoroughly so that you don't get disappointed..http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/wd_launches_versatile_network_media_player_1tb_hdd

mando_22
how can I do that, people have have been telling me it can, but I can't seem to figure it out.Use PS3 media server: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/Its open source, super easy to setup, and has a whole host of transcoding capabilities that allow it to stream MKVs to devices that dont directly support them.Though its optimized for PS3, it supports other devices, and I use it to stream to my Xbox and Android. salmun
I actually found out how to watch my videos on my TV just a while ago. I used "iwisoft free video converter" to convert my video into xbox wmv, and than just put the converter video into usb or what ever and plug it in through usb on xbox 360. "iwisoft free video converter," can also convert videos into being playable on playstation 3 and psp, and other things.
G Bass
i just keep everything in 480p and stream stuff on my Wii from one of my 2 hdd. that's my only solution until i have the money to build a new pc.
jen2sons
xbox 360 does not support MKV only Avi and WMV files. Unless you stream them with Vuze which works very well with xbox 360 and is free. You can also convert them to wmv and then the xbox 360 will see them.

Without having to pre select and pre-convert them like Vuze does. I can say personally it works great, I stream a number of MKVs to my xbox using PS3 Media Server. jen2sons
Thanks for the info . I will have to check up on those. I am forever converting files for my sons to watch on their xbox's . Be nice not to have to stress that anymore.
