About:

Blood-C is a 2011 anime/manga series and 2012 film produced and collaborated by Studio Production I.G and manga creators CLAMP. This is Production I.G's second anime series related to the Blood franchise, the first being Blood+, which aired in 2005-2006.

Synopsis:

The story revolves around Saya Kisaragi, a normal girl who is overly clumsy and kind. She lives with her father, the head of a shrine, and learns the 'art of the sword' from him. She is then faced with various forms of 'trials' that test her kindness, and the misfortune it brings for being 'overly-kind'. Saya, holds up her kind, against the misfortune, of her friends, though she stumbles a few times, she gets up stronger. In her journey, how will she fair, why is she being tested?

The Enemy:

In this incarnation of the Blood franchise, Saya Kisaragi is a shrine maiden who lives and trains with her priestly father. Though clumsy and easily prone to distraction, she is also (paradoxically) very athletic - which is good, because her duty to use a sword to kill supernatural beasties (in this case exceedingly weird critters called Elder Bairns) is still intact.

What is an Elder Bairns you ask?

They are pretty much like a Gargoyle rip-off. Yes they are statues that come to life at night. In the first episode Saya goes up to one and waits till dark for it to awaken. It looks like a statue of some kind of monk but then it sprouts Praying Mantis pincers for arms.

Impressions:

Blood-C may be best enjoyed by those with little or no familiarity with previous titles in the franchise, as what CLAMP has done to Saya in this incarnation borders on a travesty, both visually and behaviorally. A Saya who is chipper except when doing her killing just doesn't feel right, and those who aren't fans of CLAMP artistry will not find their minds changed by the character designs.

Saya seems to be a “doesn't get it” kind of girl for most of the episode. She trips over nothing, she's habitually late to school because she's helping someone, and she's almost terminally cheerful. On the way to school she sings a song about what a nice day it is. (In a nice auditory touch, she sings in rhythm with her footsteps.) The one false note here is how attached she seems to be to her father – at one point she blushes when he touches her. Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Still, one factor makes this first episode watchable, and it's a big one: the featured fight scene in the episode's last quarter is an incredible example of fight choreography and musical accompaniment. Even if you otherwise give up on this episode early on, skip ahead to the 15 minute mark and watch the fight and the build-up to it.

If future episodes focus on that kind of content then viewers could be in for a treat, but unfortunately it also looks like suffering through typical school drivel will be a requirement for enjoying the high points.

I've never watched any of the blood franchise, so maybe that will help. I am however a big CLAMP fan- especially of their drawing style.

I love the opening tune to this, the japanese, french and english all blend into this song really well. I've had it in my head since it came out- i've practically been listening to it non-stop. I like the ending too.

Can't wait to see more.

Hope this series is good I heard is related to the Blood the last vampire story just wondering when it takes place before or in between the blood story

Neither. It's an 'alternate' take and albeit a rather crappy one so far. I'm going to give it a chance and watch episode 2, but if it's not upped it's anti by the end of episode 2 I can safely say I'm going to drop this show and forget it was ever made.

I downloaded the first episode about 4 days ago, and I turned it off when she started singing while walking (after leaving her house). I will definitely watch it, but I wasn't really interested in watching it at the time (it didn't make it hard for me to not turn it off, though).

  • 3 weeks later...

It was so terrible I dropped it after episode 2. It doesn't change.

It's simply nonsense, Saya is deeply in love with her father, Saya is a complete idiot who doesn't understand anything, it's all about innocent school life, she sings about her laundry being done every day on her way to school, then sings about how well her day has been, then at the end of the episode you get a monster of the week battle.

Honestly you can skip to the last 2-5 minutes of the episode each week and still catch the only part that matters.

After watching episode 4 I actually wouldn't at all be surprised if this turns into a twisted horror show and in few episodes (It kinda feels like Saya is about to lose her sanity soon). Actually I think that might be the only thing that saves this series for me. Oh and for anyone how didn't know, this is to be a 12 episode series.

It's also been announced there will be a movie as well.
