wakosun
Brotherhood was better... the ending fit the story. When Fullmetal Alchemist's ending simply could not much the sheer epicness. The ending alternate world arc was too random and too late in the story to work.
blank sentiment
Brotherhood. It was more consistent with its rules. Personally, I hated the way to kill a Homunculus in the first anime, and thought it made no sense when you remember Equivalent Exchange. The Manga/Brotherhood method, which is exhausting their stone until they don't have enough power left to make an energy-mass conversion to heal themselves is more in line with the Alchemy as established. Soul Z
I liked FMA story more than Brotherhoods'. It has more sad moments in it and it's more serious than Brotherhood.

GoR
I loved both. However, Brotherhood has my vote over the original any day.The first time I watched FMA, I loved it! I loved the characters. I was really drawn in by the story and I couldn't stop watching it until I finished it. However, when the ending came, I felt like I needed more. The ending was sudden, the last 2 or 3 episodes being really rushed. It was a great idea but I didn't like how it was executed. Even with the movie afterwards, I was disappointed and felt like I was left hanging. So many unanswered questions. And this was before I found out that the ending was different in the manga. But anyways, I left the anime glad I saw it but thought of it as just a "good" anime. It was because of Brotherhood that I became absolutely obsessed with the entire series. Yes, the first 14 episodes are rushed but I have friends who only saw brotherhood and they were able to follow easily. I like how background characters in the original series had larger roles and became more three dimensional. I love how multiple story lines developed. There was one point during the Promised Day when they showed all the different characters in different places. That was when I realized how many characters there were. And I felt like I knew them all pretty well. It takes special talent to be able to make the audience feel that. The ending left me more satisfied. Of course, I was upset that it was over, but at the same time, I felt like it was a good moment to end the story. And when I had finished Brotherhood, I became absolutely obsessed with everything FMA. I'm in the process of purchasing all of the manga [which I had already read completely after finishing the anime]. I have Edward and Alphonse stuffies. My phone background is a human transmutation circle and I have tons of posters in my room. I love talking about alchemy and the series with anyone who can stand me. I absolutely love the world of FMA. And it was Brotherhood that allowed me that, not the original series.

evilhuman
Fma brotherhood is more epic and the story is more from the manga than the original with some part that not from the manga and no ending.
batosi07
It depends on the aspect you are talking about. Plot is hands down brotherhood. In terms of animation style, and the individual characters, I liked the original better. Overall I think they are equal. It does not bother me when an adaption doesn't fallow the manga; that is why it is called an adaption, not an exact copy.

ThatBoyNice247
I like brotherhood better, Brotherhood is what the original should of been in the first place. In brotherhood Ed actually grew a little bit, their was actually change in the characters as you progress in the show. Ed and winry actually had a love connection is this one. Mustang actually seem more badass in this one and he actually fought something, This goes for everyone Hawkeye, Jean, Alex etc. I also loved the new characters and they added more to the story. I like the music in this one over the original too.Overall I think Brotherhood is definitely superior over the original.

the_jayman
I watched both in an intense anime marathon and this question is impossible for me to answer, both are amazing and engrossing stories and as koby said FMA has all the emotion and the engrossing story and brotherhood has everything the first lacked at the expense of emotion - I think both are amazing
ARES_XIV
to me FMA Brotherhood is the best for a story line, but with emotion, FMA no doubt about it. overall i would prefer FMA Brotherhood as it was EPIC from the BEGINNING TILL THE END even though i was lost for a sec whether i was watching some ova version of FMA =P
tyrium
I liked FMA better than brotherhood because it had more to do with characters emotions. Like edwards mom being sloth, but in FMAB sloth was just a giant monster. Even the episode with barry the butcher...while FMAB just skips his little side story. Yea, just seems rushed.
