The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya

Have watched all of season 1 (2006), season 2 (2009) and the movie "The disappearance of haruhi suzumiy.

Of all the anime I have watched down the years nothing has ever sucked me in as much this (makes me curse reality now lol).

Anyway two questions for you guys:

1) Anyone know if season 3 / more movies are on the way?

2) Can anyone reccommend anything else that even remotely comes close to "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya"?

It all depends on the fans. If the merchandise and DVDs sell well enough for KyoAni to make a good profit, then they will probably make a third season... Same goes with the movie.

Hehe, also for anime that comes close to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya; that's a very unique anime with one wacky storyline, so finding an anime that pretty close to that will be extremely hard. But, if you like the School Life/Super-natural aspect of anime (like I do), then you'd enjoy Angel Beats. The main character will remind you of Haruhi, and the story takes place in a School, in the "After-Life". If you want to read the plot, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Beats!. But, be warned, don't read too far into the wikipedia article, as it contains spoilers. Only read the first paragraph of the section labeled "Plot". In addition, this anime was created this year, so the animations and artwork are top-notch. Have fun! ;)

I second Angel Beats. Warped and utterly entertaining. Darker than Haruhi, but well worth viewing if you want something remotely in that vein anime wise. But if you're willing to watch something non-anime that might fit the bill, then may I suggest the original BBC mini-series version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

to answer 1) Not in Japan as I know of, although the "Disappearance" (Does anyone know what I am going about there?) DVD is due out by June 2011 (DAMN DELAYS!).

Most animes creating a new season depend on the funds of the DVD's sold, mangas sold, merchandise sold, novels etc.. If the anime is popular (VERY POPULAR) then there is a high possibility that the company will make another season. That IS unless the anime has ended or the manga has ended which results in the anime ending.

there most likely wont be a third season in the near future, yes it has alot of things sold and many fans across the world but there are internal disputes and factors stopping them from beginning production, one of the main ones involves the voice actor for haruhi who not only pissed the company off but wants to pursue things besides voice acting.
