Recommended Posts

Square-Enix recently announced that the original Final Fantasy games are coming to Steam and mobile platforms as 2D pixel remasters.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series will comprise Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy VI, with each game releasing individually. For long-term fans that will be hugely exciting news - a chance to revisit some of their most beloved RPGs of all time in a way that perfectly captures the spirit of those original game.

They've renamed the existing release of 3 & 4 to say 3D Remake... but also used lowercase lettering so it doesn't match up with the rest of the series.

They've changed the name of 5 & 6 on the Store page only to say Old version.

Final Fantasy V on the Steam store also now has this note:

As does Final Fantasy VI:

So if you want the existing versions of the game, better jump on them while you can, you've got less than a month.

FF1 & FF2 are $12 each, FF3-FF6 are $18 each. Seems very steep in my opinion.

Also the choice of font is horrendous once again. It's way too compact and tiny and just doesn't go well with any of the games. Square-Enix and fumbled these games again.

Another comparison. Suggests Square-Enix got lazy and really only updated the sprites for the main characters while re-used most enemy sprites as they were. Backgrounds were of course updated mostly to support 16:9.

Meh, doesn't really seem worth getting if I've played them in a previous format. These remasters hardly look any better than previous versions. Maybe if the new sprites were MORE detailed than the original snes sprites, but they don't look it. Just a higher resolution is not a draw for me.
