badman
The rules state this: "Do not rip or steal images from other artists, forums, or webpages." Yet, in this anime/gaming community, it's fair to say we break this rule a lot, by using animators' art for our own purposes, ranging from transformative to copying. I personally think it's odd that we can do this, but that the rule seems geared more towards a member's art being copied. Granted anime art is recognizable as that artist's property anyway, yet a members art can more easily be stolen due to the anonymous nature of forums. I still think the double standard is weird. ZeroPenguins
I believe it's more of the fact it's for those SOTW or BOTW or whatever image competitions this forum has. So users can't steal other people's work and claim as their own.
† LimitLess
I believe it's more of the fact it's for those SOTW or BOTW or whatever image competitions this forum has. Correct It's not meant for normal user who would put up avatar/sig copied straight from the web. Like your avatar is cut out from a pic, so is mine. Those rules don't apply do that.
Alice
As has already been stated. This is geared more to the graphic contests and not for normal users. Contest entries are the ones that have to abide by that rule, because it is considered cheating. Entries into such contest must be completely original and cannot in anyway resemble another image. For example we had someone in our last contest try to do this and almost got banned for awhile because of it... Examples1 -Entry Submitted Image it was from 2 -Entry Submitted Image it was from See how all this person did was make modifications to the original image instead of creating something new? Koby
I'd say that the rule doesn't imply not being allowed to use stock images in your signatures. What the rule was meant to be was that you don't simply take another persons work and claim it as your own. It's pretty clear we don't make the character art we use, but the backgrounds and effects and stuff are typically our own. We use the character art under the fair-use law as a fan of the work it comes from. We don't claim ownership to the character, but the work itself. It not just about the competitions but the Graphics section as a whole. In the past we had users posting Showcases of works they claimed they made, only to have users from various communities including deviantArt come to us and prove that the user was simply stealing their work and claiming it their own. What makes matters worse was that one of the users who did this was once one of our head Graphic Team members.
