so i watched the latest funi dub n dvd 480p video. using mpc-hc with madvr i watched it at normal resolution without zooming in. the quality was pretty much hd to me. then i downloaded the bs-fuji raws for one of the episodes. low and behold when i watched it at normal resolution the quality was great. the only diiference was the hd had a darker colors and some line distortion. so im wodering, aside from line distortion, are bluray vids have a darker color then there dvd counter parts?

For one thing these episodes of One Piece was still animated in SD at the time. I'm not sure when One Piece officially upgraded to HD animation, but I can say they didn't start doing Blu-rays till the Punk Hazard arc which is still nearly 300 episodes away from where the dub is at currently.

Typically the difference between dvd and blu-ray on a show that is actually animated in HD is: lines look sharper on the BD, colors are more vivid, and such. DVDs tend to wash out the colors and soften lines a bit in comparison.

so its not just the encoder right. thats just how hd vids look.

You could compare raw providers to find out, but the studio's upscale process will destroy detail.

For a show like One Piece, that isn't such a big deal anyway. You could upscale the DVD's yourself and attain the same, if not better results.
