After much teasing, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has finally been unveiled, leading to such high praise as “at least it looks better than the Xbox One,” although in fairness most seem reasonably pleased with it.

Apart from more of the tedious claptrap about American TV which both MS and Sony are now apparently obsessed with, Sony has also unveiled plenty of blockbuster titles – and offered a surprisingly strong focus on indie games, quite unlike Microsoft.

Sony has finished off its PlayStation 4 announcements with the news that the PS4′s “holiday” launch will see it retailing at $399, substantially less than $499 for the X-box 1.

As with the Xbox One however, the console still adheres to the same same bizarre parallel universe gaming industry exchange rates of $1:€1, actually going a step further in grinding down the British wretches who insist on maintaining their own currency by hitting them with the even less favorable equivalent pricing of $550.

Having beaten Microsoft’s conspicuously anemic offering in terms of price, specs, line-up and consumer rights, little seems to suggest the next generation of consoles can belong to anyone but Sony…

Sony has put the fears of gamers to rest by announcing even more clearly that the PlayStation 4 will support used games, as well as trading or lending of games, and does not require constant net access to play single player disc titles.

In what was very clearly a huge dig at Microsoft’s ambiguous position, Sony’s emphatic affirmation of the “ownership” paradigm of disc-based games drew huge cheers from E3 crowds and probably ranks as their biggest PR coup for the PS4 so far.

Just to rub things in further, Sony provides a helpful video describing the procedure required to share a game on the PS4:

Note this comes from a Japanese 2ch to English page so theirs a little Japanese bios, please pay it no heed, and they definitely don't like the x-box 1 much.  If you have any questions about the meaning of some of the things they talk about just ask and I'll post it.

The only reservation I have is the controller. I've always found the Xbox controllers to be more comfortable.

That being said, I will be buying a PS4 day one, I'm waiting for an exact date to be announced before I do however.

Just a point that some (most people) seem to have missed from Sony's briefing however. You WILL have to pay to play online games from the PS4 onwards. They're making Playstation Plus the equivalent of Xbox Live for the upcoming console.

So those of you looking for more cheap online play will be disappointed. The existing benefits of Playstation Plus remain the same however and, if you're an existing subscriber, you won't have to do anything. Your Playstation plus account is valid for all of Sony's consoles, you won't need a new one for PS4.

Regards.

I'm not that fussed. So far there aren't really any games I'm that bothered about as launch titles. The only one I'm interested in thus far is inFamous but that's out next spring not as a launch title. I'll probably get FIFA for it rather than 360 but other than that.

The money doesn't bother me, I'm fortunate enough to have a well paid, secure job, so I'll probably pick one up regardless. I think I'll go with Amazon or something though as a lot of the shops near me are selling it with additional crap. Killzone and Drive Club seem the most popular add-ons.

When it has a confirmed date I'll stick a pre-order on Amazon with a second controller, FIFA and anything else. I should be able to spare anything up to around £650 for it so it give me plenty of room for add ons, when there are ones I like.

I'll have to include a PS+ subscription as well, as I don't have one currently.

I absolutely agree about the interesting games thing.  I am a big assassins creed fan though, and therefore an Ubisoft fan so I think Watch Dogs looks cool.

Yeah, there are games I'd get just to have something to play. The launch period of a console if never the best to be fair. FIFA 14, inFamous, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV, Batman: Arkham Origins are all games within the 'launch window' (first 3-4 months) that'll probably be worth a punt so there's stuff to choose from.

More interested in The Witcher 3, Final Fantasy XV, Dark Souls II, Gran Tourismo 6, TES Online myself being and RPG nerd. No real release date for them though so I'll have to make do with some straight actions games until then.

I always like new console launches because of the buzz it makes. I'll probably get an Xbox One at some point too as I don't really care about the 'shit' that comes with it. I don't buy/trade in used games, I have an internet connection and my 360 covers backwards compatability.

I've chosen the PS4 as my 'launch' console though. Looking forward to it. Even though my soon-to-be-upgraded PC will blow it out of the water.

Exactly, I am an RPG nerd as well.  I am PUMPED about The Witcher 3, FF XV (as well as FF XIV), TES Online, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Kingdom Hearts III.  So i know what ya mean.  Plus I want Destiny on it.

And I will also be getting an Xbox One eventually.  Just not at launch.  For the same reasons.  I've always been a Halo fan, and a Fable fan, among other Xbox exclusives.

And not to mention Titanfall looks amazing.  lol.

Yeah. I can't help but feel all these people completely disregarding the Xbox One now will buy one 3 or 4 years down the line when there are some exclusive games for the system.

It's naive to think this is the first time someone has tried to take our "consumer rights" away. Do you use Steam? Then you've given them away already. Have an iPhone or iPod? Then you've given them away already. As I've said multiple times, anyone using these services has already signed up to a system where they don't own what they purchase - you're only renting it essentially - so why should this stop them.

I'm withholding my cash more because I don't think the console is worth the asking price. I don't want Kinect this generation, I'm not paying more for a next generation console because it's got one in.

Overall, the people moaning need to accept facts. Either you accept these sorts of systems, which 90% of the people on this forum will have accepted anyway, regardless of the Xbox One, or you don't buy into the next generation.

Yeah unlike the PS3, I think Sony did a great job announcing the PS4.  The fact that it's $100 cheaper really amazes me.  The only thing that bothers me is the fact you will now have to play for a PS+ account to play multiplayer games.  I don't have to do that on Nintendo or PC so I think that is a little lame.

Well I own a game on Steam (at least so far) until Steam the company goes away.  I don't have to pay Steam every month to play their games.  None of their servers get shut down.  I can play a game that was released 10 years ago or 10 days ago.  Every new PC I get I can play every game I have without having to worry about backwards compatibility.  But yeah if Steam dies so do my games. :P

The PS4 definitely has its advantages over the Xbox One. I believe Sony won E3 (Nintendo doesnt really count since they only had a Nintendo Direct). I'm preordering the PS4 as soon as I get the chance and I'm definitely looking forward to playing it.
