Dae314
From the HP site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00553050&tmp_task=useCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=1841885 ^ How to add/remove/replace the hard drive with a video . Ok, now where to get a new one. I assume you have somewhere sitting around a Windows install disk because you don't just buy hard drives with Windows preloaded. You can get drives from newegg, amazon, tigerdirect, etc. Whichever your favorite e-retailer is. The drive is likely a 2.5" SATA II drive, and I don't think they really sell stuff lower than 250GB anymore so just get 250GB. Alternatively, if you wanna give your mom's computer an upgrade at the same time since she doesn't have high usage you could get a small 70-120GB SSD (overkill though). SATA III drives are compatible with SATA II. If your mom's drive is IDE, you need to get IDE though, you can't get SATA. In this tech forum, at the top, I have a guide for buying computer hardware. That guide isn't just for people who want to build a computer, you can also use it to find out more basic information about core computer system components. If you'd like, you can look at the HDD section, and it should give you plenty of information as to what to look for when you buy the drive. † L4ugh
NM, looks like Dae beat me to it, the video he linked to should work. Do you have a picture that shows the bottom of the labtop? If you're lucky, there is either one large panel; or a small and medium sized one. Under those panels should be where you replace ram and hdds. Problem is, not all labtops make it that easy to replace the hdd. Some will bury the sucker in there so you have no choice but to gut it. If this is the type you have, you'd be better off just paying someone else to do it. To replace it, all you should need is a regular labtop hdd, unless it uses some special type of hdd. You could probably go ssd if you wanted to, but it would be a more expense option. You will want to make sure you get the right type of hdd. It's really hard to replace an IDE with a SATA. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I can't seem to find any decent specs on that model. Edited February 14, 2013 by L4ugh

† An IP BreAKDoWN
Laptop IDE drives are really old, can you verify via this image? http://www.laptopparts101.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/sata-ide-laptop-hard-drive.jpg If it is in fact an IDE you'll have to get this drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136129 Though you should consider an upgrade since I'm willing to bet the laptop is 7+ years old.
