What's everyone think of this build?

I've been choosing parts for my brother's computer over the past while and I was wondering what everyone thought about the parts I chose.

I like the case cause of the dust filter where the psu goes and the rubber stuff where the drives go.

I'm a little nervous about choosing psu's cause of what they can do to your system if they're faulty. This one seems good though and it's from a good brand from what I've read. Will it be enough to power everything?

We may start messing around with overclocking too.

The graphics card seems to be a pretty good and it has a lot of good scores plus it comes with a game too. I won't be unlocking it to a 6970 though unless I feel really comfortable with overclocking. Are any other brands of this card better or any cards that are better than this in the same price range? and would getting a 2GB version for upgrading in the future be worth it? I was thinking of going with an asus 560ti before this card.

I might not get the hard drives cause they're greens but they seem to be a pretty good price atm. I've got an old spare drive so I might just use that for storage until prices go back down and I can get a WD black or 4 lol.

BreAKDoWN suggested the ssd and he said it's worked great for him. I don't plan on using raid until trim is supported with it.

Do you think a 24" monitor would be better? This one gets lots of good reviews but there are 24" monitors for around the same price.

Also will there be enough clearance for my memory and side of the case for the EVO? and will the memory be compatible with the mobo?

And of course are there any better deals on websites for any of these? and will everything come with all the cables I need or will I have to order some?

Thanks and I'd appreciate any suggestions! This is gonna be my first build, even if it's gonna be my brother's lol

Looks good!

PSU is more than enough to power the computer, I think it's at 23.6inch for a reason (something to do with the resolution) but I don't know much about monitors nor I really care. I don't know about deals but the parts all comes with cables and screws unless you're buying OEM stuff. They don't come with anything >.> Lols There are enough slots for the RAM and yes it is the correct one. GPU I would grab the 7000 series since they are a lot more powerful =)

About the motherboard, two things.

I have the exact same one, bar one thing. Your one is Gen 3, that is, it comes with PCI-E 3.0 slots (3.0, as in x32 buses, as compared to PCI-E 2.0 x16, which is what everyone's been using for the past few years). You're paying extra for that Gen 3 feature, which you're not going to use. The Radeon card you picked out will work at full speed in a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot, so save yourself a little bit of money and go with the non-Gen 3 version of that motherboard.

Also, if I'm right, your motherboard comes with a front-bay device that has two USB 3.0 ports on it. I learned the hard way that it actually doesn't fit in most cases. Most cases these days come with 5.25" drive bays (the size of DVD drives) but the USB device is 3.5". So you'll need to look for a 3.5" to 5.25" adaptor. The USB device, although the right size, can't go in one of the hard drive bays, because the front fan will be in the way of whatever devices you'll want to connect to it. So, get the adaptor and put it in one of the 5.25" drive bays on top.

About the RAM - Although my rig has similar RAM, that is 4 x 4GB, that much RAM isn't necessary for a gaming rig. If you still want 16GB, I suggest you try and get 2 sticks of 8GB, that way, the processor can use them properly (core i7 2600K don't do quad channel memory, so that means, it won't use 4 sticks at their rated speeds...at least as far as I understand things). At minimum. get either 2 sticks of 4GB or 4 sticks of 2GB (8GB total, minimum).

So first of all I'd like to know what your budget is and what this computer is going to be used for.

If it's only for gaming there is no point in taking the i7 2600k the i5 2500k does the same performance in games.

Secondly the mobo, it's useless to take a gen 3 p8Z68. In fact it's useless to take Z68 you might as well take a P8P67 pro it'll change nothing.

About PCI express 3.0 no graphic cards on the market work better on it yet and not for at least a year.

About memory it's useless to have 16GB, 8GB is enough. Personnaly I have 4GB and have never used all of it.

No use in buying arctic silver 5, you'll be better of buying a better cooler (like cooler master hyper 612 for not much more or if you to do some serious overclocking noctua U12P SE2)

The PSU is also overkill a 600W PSU is more than enough for one HD6950.

About the graphic card it depends on your budget but if you're gonna stay on a HD6950 price I'd say wait for the HD7870 and 7850, they are supposed to go out in March. If the computer is going to be a pure gaming computer I'd suggest you try to take the best graphic card you can because it will always be the limiting point for games.

About the screen well If you can find a 24" 1920x1200 that dosen't cost to much it would be the best. Personally I have a 16/10 screen and a 16/9 and for working I prefer the 16/10 plus with 1920x1200 you can still watch 1080p anime/videos in native resolution.

The SSD isn't the best but it's probably one of the best performance/price ratio. It's sold out on Newegg though.

Also you didn't include W7 in the price so I presume you already have it, if you haven't then include it in the total price.

HD6950 is usually better than 560 ti, not by much but it is and adding the fact that you can unlock it to a HD6970 it get's much better. About gtx 580 better get HD7950 it has a great overclocking potential, more RAM and pretty much the same performance (for less heat). The thing is the 7xxx will go much lower in prices once the gtx 6xx go out. It's always the debate of whether to buy now or wait for lower prices. (for example I bought my HD 6850 over a year ago at 170€ and now it's at 110€)

PS : if you wanna get a 7950 get the sapphire overclocked version it's pretty much the best out there (source : AnandTech)

Hey guys thanks for all the feedback. You've given me a lot to think about.

Think this motherboard would be better? I still wanna leave my brother some headway when he wants to upgrade the build in the future though.

the fact that nvidia's drivers are easier to deal with. and heat is basically the same...

umm driver difference is history and especially since HD7950 just went out the drivers are only going to get better. Heat is absolutely not the same on the HD7950 and a gtx580 just look at a few tests (see anandtech).

About the motherboard better get a P8P67 pro it's cheaper for exactly the same performance.

Again with the Gen 3, don't bother with it. See if there's a non-Gen 3 version of that board, otherwise it's money down the drain for a feature you're not going to use.

I'm guessing my processor doesn't support pci-e 3? If it does I was thinking that I could get a new graphics card that supports pci-e 3 for this build in a few years

Yes I think the sandy bridge actually don't support PCI express 3.0 and anyway even in a few years PCI express 2.0 will not be obselete, I saw a test on a HD5870 which shows it works at 99% with PCI express 2.0 8x instead of 16x and at 95% with PCI express 2.0 4x.

Plus the actual graphic cards aren't even using PCI express 2.0 maximum bandwidth.

And about your CPU I already said it but an i5 2500k will perform exactly the same as a i7 2600k in games for 100$ less because the graphic card is always the limiting point in a gaming rig, even with sevral graphic cards. The only point of an i7 2600k is if you do encoding or things like that that use all of the CPU power because the i7 has hyperthreading.
