Question about PS3 HDDs

I'm thinking about upgrading my PS3's HDD, right now I've got a standard 80GB HDD, and I wanna upgrade to at least a 320GB, but I need to some things cleared up before I go through with purchasing one.

First off, if I buy it in-store from say.... Best Buy, is it already formatted in FAT32? If not, can I format it using the PS3's Format Hard Drive option?

Also, any good recommendations for a Hard Drive, cheap & from Best Buy?

Make sure the hard drive you're getting is 2.5" (inches). Full size hard drives, 3.5", won't fit inside the PS3. And in case you're wondering, I saw a video recently where some guys replaced the hard drive with a SSD, and didn't see any improvement whatsoever in load times, so just go for hard drive. If you have a portable/mobile drive handy (the ones that use just a single USB cable, with no separate power cable), you can take the drive out of that and use it.

Rikuo is correct you do need a 2.5" to have it fit.... but if your a lazy ass and you couldn't give to craps on where your HD is you can use a external HD... thats the reason sony made it like normal computer HDDs.. for any cheep HDD you can get a refurbished HDD.. the one i got was a Hitachi 1tb for 24bux

When you replace the hard drive in the PS3 it will partition, format, and restore a copy of the os to the hard drive for use.

There is also a backup option in the system menu that will copy save data & media to an external drive, you then can restore it back to the new drive.

here's a good step by step with pictures on how to swap out the drive to.
