Hollywood Will Sue Australian File-Sharers

After Hollywood studies have sued more than 3.6 million people in Germany and 200,000 in the US, they seem to have their eyes set on Australia.

One of the Australian’s largest Internet service providers released a report, saying that thousands of the citizens will soon be accused of a crime by the Hollywood studios and demanded to settle for undisclosed amount or go to court. The “commercial invoicing” model is similar to what the Hollywood employs in other parts of the globe: some law company collaborates with a movie, music or game studios that don’t care what people think of them. With the help of a dubious bit of IP address harvesting applications, the copyright owner obtains something it claims are the real identities from Internet service providers. After this it’s only a matter of threatening to sue for an outstanding amount of money while “kindly” providing the offer to settle for less.

John Linton, head of the Australian’s Internet service provider Exetel revealed that the company had been approached by American movie distributor Lightning Entertainment. The copyright holder had a list of 150 IP addresses from which someone was sharing their film titled "Kill The Irishman". The same company is targeting nine thousand Australian-based copyright infringements.

Meanwhile, Lightning Entertainment uses a front firm to extort money from suspected violators under the name of Movie Rights Group. The latter’s employees are actually not talking about who they are, while their domain name is anonymised. However, it is known that there is someone named Gordon Walker, the outfit’s vice president of sales and marketing, who had said the web is the “ultimate unkillable beast”. Nevertheless, the Movie Rights Group represents a “commercial solution” to what the copyright owners had previously seen as a legal problem. Gordon Walker explained that one needs police on the information superhighway. Considering the fact the government would not go that far, it would be only up to Hollywood studios. According to his comparison, if one is pulled over by a traffic cop, he kind of expects that the latter has evidence that one has been speeding rather than simply pulls over the drivers that are slow enough to be caught.

Well it's a good thing I stopped using torrents but at the same time I don't live there so yeah what do you guys think.

I don't think you have to, you just have to stop using torrents cause according to every tech nerd torrents can easily be tracked but direct download are not so easy to.

Lol good thing I haven't used torrents for 3+ years now. But wow I didn't know that they are now targeting Australia now. >.>

Well thanks for the heads up, but even so they will never win at court if you only download them but don't share them. Because it is soo easy to make crap loads of people agree that this is unfair, since you're getting sued while others are not. The question is why me and why not everyone, right?

The thing is like you said they will never catch everyone but when they just catch one person they make it seem like you are a murderer in there eyes cause if you can't catch them all then you just take what you can.

In the end if your that unlucky soul that is caught may God have mercy on your soul cause they will come at you like a hungry pack of wolves.

True but I mean if you only download, we all know that almost everyone downloads movies. Well everyone I know downloads even my teachers/professors download movies, not surprised if the Prime Minister of my country downloads movies. And that is the reason why they only target file sharers I believe.

Lol nothing to be scared of, they are only targeting file sharers. I'm with shitty Telstra Bigpond and Vividwireless. Both of them track your usage and complain if you download illegal stuff >.>

So the only way you can get caught is if you download after which you proceed to seed what ever it is you have just downloaded?

Exactly, so be careful about seeding stuff. Actually they both just complain about me downloading too much lols. But they did say no illegal crap on the TOS I sign up for.

Well it seems my brother was right, when I was using torrents (and still use it once in a blue moon) I would always seed to a 2:1 or more cause that is the kind of person I was but then my brother would always say fuck them but in someway he was right oh well guess I'm never going to seed again if I download.

  • 2 weeks later...
So what is this for downloading in general? or torrenting?

I believe it's for downloading in general but more towards file shares/ seeders so torrents I suppose. Cause it is nearly impossible to track who download/upload via direct download with out the File Servers giving away that information.
