Yu-Gi-Oh! - XYZ Update : OCG vs. TCG

So, a while back, I found out a little something concerning XYZ monsters, specifically something that people have been debating about a lot lately and this seems to be the solution.

Now, for those who don't know XYZ's are a new Type of monster and can be special summoned by combining 2 or more Level monsters to form a RANK monster. It's real complicated and all but the monsters that are used for an XYZ summoning get packed underneath the summoned XYZ monster and become "materials". You can use XYZ effects by detaching materials and sending them to the graveyard. The issue this topic addresses is an ability of "Sangan"

Now, Sangan is a limited card. Even though he's just a level 3 and has shit ATK and DEF, his effect is god damn useful. Everytime this guy goes from the field to the Grave, he let's you search out another monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck. Despite all the Fusions and Synchros and XYZ's, this effect is real useful to get a card you need to turn things around and has been ESPECIALLY useful in XYZ summoning.

Here's what people mostly do -

  1. Normal Summon "Tour Guide of the Underworld"

  2. Her effect lets you summon a Level 3 or lower Fiend monster from your Deck or Hand with it's effect negated.
  3. Special Summon Sangan.
  4. Overlay Tour Guide and Sangan to XYZ summon a Rank 3 monster.
  5. Use the XYZ's ability to send Sangan to the Grave. Since his effect resolves in the Grave, he's impervious to Tour Guide's effect negating.
  6. Add a 1500 or less to your hand, preferably Tour Guide again.
  7. Repeat until you have 2 Rank 3 monsters in one turn.

Congrats, you just summoned a bunch of monsters in one turn.

Now, according to the update -

  • In the OCG, the XYZ materials ARE NOT on the Field. Therefore, when Sangan is sent to the Grave, since he was NOT on the field, his effect doesn't activate.
  • In the TCG, however, all XYZ materials ARE on the Field. So, Sangan's effect is A-OK.
