Blu-ray Drive HELP NEEDED!

Recommended Posts

I recently received my Blu-ray Burner drive from newegg, but it failed to come with anything but the drive. Upon contacting newegg all they want to do is replace or refund but provide no help with the drive. I don't have a printer to print out the return label etc.

The drive fails to load as a Blu-ray drive. On the 'My Computer' screen it just says it's a DVD-ROM drive. When you put in a Blu-ray disc it changed to say CD Drive and when you click to go in it there is nothing there.

Upon reading reviews it seems I need a firmware update or something that should have came with the drive but didn't.. and on the LG website they have no mention of the drive nor any help.

I found this on the feedback:

Going back to the firmware issue I have found that to update the firmware for LG drives requires that you locate and install the LG Toolkit (fwupdate). If you google the internet you will find it. Once installed you will need to go to MSCONFIG to turn off the application or it will load and run continuously. Once you run the program once you usually don't need to run it more frequently than every six months or so. Having it run all of the time is a waste. The program locates and installs the latest version of fwupdate when it is run. The program identifies the LG drive and locates the latest version of the firmware that is available. This is the only way that I have ever had any luck updating the firmware on LG drives. The toolkit comes with the RETAIL version drives that contain software and/or cables along with the drive.

However upon Googling I couldn't find any place to get the LG Toolkit or firmware, etc.

Any help on getting the drive to actually act like a Blu-ray drive would be extremely appreciated.

The drive you purchased is not a retail drive, its an OEM Drive, and as far as for Blu-Ray support goes, which OS you are running, cause Windows XP does not seems to support many blu-ray drives. And I tried to find that tool for the drive, but couldn't find it.

Turns out I didn't need that after all.

All I needed was UDF 2.5 Reader for Windows XP (to explore drive files) along with the latest version of Cyberlink PowerDVD HD (for video playback) and DVDfab HD (for ripping/copying).

Only problem is I tested ripping on Resident Evil Afterlife Blu-ray and on several tests the audio cut out. Might just be due to the protection used on the disc as it did pop up saying something about playback may be an issue on PS3 due to it. Or maybe the disc was just scratched on that video, IDK. I'll test with some Anime later when I feel like it. I'll test burning regular dvd's later as well.

  • 2 weeks later...
It's been over a week now, you liking the drive Koby?

Honestly been too busy to really test it out when it comes to Blu-ray ripping and I don't have any blank Blu-ray discs to try burning either. It works great as a DVD burner so far though. =P
