Subtitle Editing

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to edit my subtitle tracks in either the .sub or .srt format. I have tried Aegisub but the program fails to load. I asked for help of the irc channel and all I got from them was to install software I already have installed. If anyone knows of another program that will allow me to split, join, change font, and color of the sub text I would be very grateful.

how does aegisub fail to load? i use subrip to rip .srt subs..well ocr them in subrip..then i use aegisub to time and style the subs..joining and splitting subs ive never had an experience where i had to do that..if ur working with .srt subs you could prolly just use word or notepad..

I have subrip as well and use it the same way you mentioned above. To correct the errors left by subrip I just ended up downloading SubtitleEdit. It seems to be able to do everything I need.

Do you know of an easy way to burn a set of subs into a video without encoding? I really don't want to encode the video again, and the sub in question is needed in all languages.

.ASS subs are the only way to go.

But if you must use SRT subs, then just edit them in notepad. >.>

What exactly is it that .ass offers that you don't get in .srt? I see .ass being used by all the fansubbers, but I never really understood what makes .ass so great. It doesn't seem they are supported by to many programs. Atleast the ones that are good for beginners anyways. When I watch a vid with .ass sub they don't seem all the different form the vid with .srt either. SubtitleEdit does seem to support .ass but I've never really seen any reason to use .ass over .srt.

You can do so much more with it. You can typeset, you can use fx (karaoke, etc), the possibilities are near endless. You are able to select color, font, border, shadow, cut text up, and a million other things.

SRT is really limited.

What about subtitle workshop? I don't use it much i have to admit, but when the correction of the title timing is needed, for movies normally. Though i never tried it, i know it has the option to split, join, change font, and color of the text.

Thanks for the suggestion Oblivia, I'll have to try that one out. SubtitleEdit does what I need it to do but it would be nice to have something with more options in the future.

Edit: Ok, one more question does anyone know the correct method that is used by fabsubbers to differentiate between the subs of two people talking at the same time. I've seen were some times they put a "-" in front of the text when someone starts to talk, but I have also seen a change in colors of the text. What would be the fansubber approved method of differentiating between the subs of two talking?
