cool but im only converting HD stuff, and only when stagevu cant encode them properly. there have only been two things that i need to convert right now, one is the 1080p AVI rip of Gundam Unicorn Ep2, stagevu uses the Japanese audio track for some reason.. & Freezing Ep1, i cant seam to get it to encode at all. would the same settings apply to HD videos as well?

If you are going to be doing HD videos I'd suggest the h264 codec with aac audio inside a mp4 container.

Video: h264, bitrate depends on series but could go up to 2,000

Audio: aac 192 kbps

First off it's mkv.

Secondly people use it because it allows the use of multiple audio, video, and subtitle tracks. Along with the use of soft-subs. That way you don't have to mess with encoding the subs into the video, and you can easily rip the subtitles and edit them etc. Overall MKV is the best format, just that most media players besides your computer are unable to play MKV.

I would like to add that even though most people don't know it, .avi supports multiple audio tracks and soft sub subtitle tracks. It also supports H.264 video, too.

this might sound like .... well a little dumb (to me it kinda does in my mind) but is there a online converter site? like a site that u upload a video and they convert it for you to what u ask for or set up? i ask because im using MediaCoder on my computer and i like it but its the same as everything else, its takes me either a whole day to convert a video or 30-40mins to convert a 50mb vid. and i might add that its only 6mins long. so if i where to convert a HD rip of lets say, FMA Brotherhood it would take 5+hrs im sure. im going to try using it on another computer but i doubt much will change, so if theres a site like witch i described plz post a link... ill do my own searchs tonight and get back to you.

Note: im posting this from my PS3's web broweser as im trying to learn whats best for MediaCoder atm, so anything missspelled im sorry. ..

i watch on the computer, but lately i got a divx dvd/cd player. It doesn't like MKVs. So I'm trying out some of the converters. Handbrake doesn't output into xvid, I tried a couple of different things as someone mentioned that sometimes it can look the same, but nothing worked. If I have any success with AVC-Free or Any Video Converter, I'll let you all know!

Love the mkv format the best, it can be a pain sometimes getting them from your pc to your tv though. I have found though that between tversity & ps3 media server, the latter to be the best and if ps3 media server can't play the mkv for whatever reason, then a quick remux using mkv2vob helps as you can then just copy it over onto your ps3. Mkvtoolx is also a very good program...

So you're only trying to play your anime on a game console because your PC is too slow to handle the HD playback? That is kind of an iffy plan because any PC that can't even play the video will take forever to re-encode it. If I were in that situation the first thing I would do is see if I could increase the clockspeed of your cpu. Whether this is even possible depends on what hardware you have and what settings are available in your bios.

On second thought, if your PC is from 2005 you probably either have a Pentium 4 or if you're lucky, a socket 939 AMD. Even with overclocking, most of these probably can't play HD mkv's but I'm not really sure because I haven't tried this. If you're really desperate you could look around for an old processor that was top of the line when released but cheap now and is compatible with your motherboard.

Sorry if I got a little off topic but if you just don't have enough processing power different software and codecs can only help so much. It sounds like the most powerful thing you own is a PS3, its just a shame that it doesn't fully support mkv.

[edit] This only applies if your files can't be remuxed to something that a PS3 can play. If so, that might be your best option.
