When that happened to me all I did was look in "my computer" and it was there in "local disk G"

It did at first (being a 1tb portable Hard drive) have troubles being read by this old computer and it took about 5 minutes with my newer computer to read it... but as I said in the end it found it under "my computer"

It it does still fail to connect take it back and exchange it for another one, as it could be a malfunction in the actual hardware =(

Oh boy this has happened to me so many times its not even funny anymore.

First, feel the hard drive. When the hard drive spins, you're supposed to actually be able to feel some sort of shift in gravity about the drive. If it is spinning, that means the hard drive is powered on and it knows its connected to a computer. If you don't feel it, check the USB connector. The first time this happened to me, was when I left the cable in and I was moving the hard drive around in a bag - the actual connector on the drive got bent and it became unusable.

Try the drive on another computer, or leave it for a couple of days (this actually got one of my old drives working again).

Failing all that, you could buy a hard drive enclosure, or simply swap the actual hard drive inside the casing and put it inside another hard drives casing.

You'll have to find out which type of hard drive yours is, SATA, eSATA, PATA - don't ask me I haven't got a clue how to find out the difference.

If The hard drive is on and you can feel the disk spining then id say its a usb connection problem.

My advice would be to go to Computer(my computer) > right click go to properties > then device manager. > Find Universal Serial Bus Controllers > right click it then uninstall. > Then restart your computer.

Basically what this does is uninstalls the drivers for your USB ports, once the computer is rebooted the OS will reinstall them for you. Most times a fresh install of the drivers will fix any connection issues.

I hope this fixes your problem.
