Johnsmith1978
I first got my intro to anime in the 80s without realizing I was watching anime til many years later with.....Voltron. Betcha thought it'd be Robotech like a lot of 80s kids, eh? Anyhow here are some of my faves: Macross Robotech (Americanized and edited versions of Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada) 1980s Voltron (Americanized version of the far more violent Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV) Record of Lodoss War Cowboy Bebop Noir Burst Angel Gundam (original series) Big O Mazinger Z Escaflowne
normalsomeplace
My recommendation would be to start of with something which is a longer running show like Naruto or Bleach to get the sense what anime really is comparing it to cartoons . Then lock down on a genre or themes and search !

TechnoMonkey
For newer stuff you can't go wrong with Overlord or one of the big shonen series like My Hero Academia or Boruto. For older stuff, Death Note, Code Geass, Gurren Lagaan, Kill La Kill, or (once again) one of the older big Shonen affairs, Naruto, One Piece, etc.
