Question about Windows operating system

I have been thinking on getting a PC, but games I want to play and software such as Digimon Masters Online are for Windows XP, Milk Miku Dance, and mugen fighting game software, but XP has been discontinued.

I am not exactly sure if mugen and Miku Miku Dance works on other windows operating systems or not.

So since there are only computers with Windows 7 and Windows 8, I was wondering, can I play games and use software meant for XP like Digimon Masters and mugen on ether of those 2 operating systems?

And will I be able to find computers with XP or Windows 7 in stores like bestbuy ect, I heard they are hard to find?

Also I heard 8's compatability mode is bad, is that true?

lol oh irony, yesterday i just reinstalled my XP due to um yeah lets just leave it at that. ANYWHOS first XP still works, you can still get the service packs and everything and works fine, only problems is that THEY WONT BE "UPDATING XP", so if you want to use xp go ahead. Windows 7 can play xp games, some of them requires you to install xp components to get programs to work. I played 3 old games on my 7 computer that were made in 2000 and didnt have any issue. Also windows 8 has windows xp emulation of some sort i really dont know since i dont have 8. FYI if you going to install XP from scratch i recommend you have another computer on hand for downloading the necissary files since IE6(its what it has) doesnt work with modern internet. only files you need is service pack 1(not found on windows site literally) and service pack 3 which is. Happy playing.

You will not find anyone selling a NEW computer with XP anymore, although you can buy one USED.  So if you want to but a NEW computer then you really have 3 choices.

Options:

#1 - You can try running games in "XP Compatibility Mode" on a newer OS, but there is no guarantee it will work.

#2 - You can "Dual Boot" therefore installing XP + 7 or 8 together.  You will get a menu screen when boot up the computer asking you which OS to run.

#3 - Install "Virtual Box" software and install XP on it so you can run XP in a windowed environment within a newer OS.

NOTE: You might encounter problems with Drivers though since the hardware on newer computers most likely will not offer drivers compatible with XP.

actually the OS is a software, you have to install it to a blank Harddrive if you want XP. Really dont have to purchase a new computer to use it. all you can do is take a computer, swap out its hard drive with XP os, and replace it when you are done with the games. Ive done it enough times in my lifetime, and im no computer expert. LITERALLY!

I'm pretty sure you can find an iso of Windows XP SP3 floating around somewhere.

Here's my advice though:

Dual boot or use a VM. Run regular Windows 7/8 as your primary OS and use a VM or a second partition for Windows XP (depending on how much performance you need). VM is more convenient since you won't have to reboot to jump in it, but a partition runs faster.

I successfully got Rollercoaster Tycoon I and II running on my Windows 8.1 however during that experience I found out that Windows 8.1 is not as legacy friendly as Windows 7. One of the main problems I ran into was the OS display effects. I don't know the official name, but in Windows 7 under the application compatibility tab, you can disable the aero effects component of Windows completely. Windows 8 does not allow you to do that (even if you switch to a flat theme it doesn't get disabled) since the metro start screen and the side bar stuff use it.

If the game was popular, there's usually instructions scattered around the internet to get it running in Windows 7/8.
