You can try this, UNetbootin, it's designed to make the process fairly easy.

As for what distro you should try. You'd probably be better off sticking with some version of ubuntu, especially if you plan to try out steam linux. Lubuntu may be a good one you could try.

Cruchbang is also one I'd have to recommend, but it may be difficult for a beginner to pick up.

having some issues with that it keeps trying to burn to a disc, but no discs like being burnt to...

Is this referring to UNetbootin?

The link I gave offers instructions. All you have to do is give it an iso and point it at your flash drive. If it's not seeing the drive, try formatting it first.

What distro are you trying to use?

Speaking of Fedora, last time I looked it went so downhill that I never looked at it again. They were basically releasing unfinished versions that is buggy and hell unstable as stable builds, hell most people couldn't even boot it. Anyhow that was awhile ago, I haven't really been back to the linux scene for ages.

Alot of Fedoras issues were with the darn update client that would try to update certain system files that shouldn't be updated at the same tiime (Mostly the darn X11 Drivers and the Kernel at once). Causing the darn thing not to boot correctly the next go around.
