How is the cd not working?

Is it failing to boot during system start up?

Probably another stupid question, but did you tell the bios to boot from the cd?

Personally I think there are better linux distros than ubuntu, but it would probably be one of the easiest for beginners.

I would also like to inform you that the open source os community suffers from some serious elitism. Calling a linux distro unix on their forums will likely get you attacked. Even referring to BSD as unix could get you crapped on. A good linux forum that I really like is the crunchbang (#!) forum. They do a much better job at tolerating noobs than pretty much any other linux forum I've come across. It could be a good place to ask questions when you get linux up and running.

the cd is not being recognized by my computer at all.  Yeah could see that being the case :P.  Ubuntu just seemed the easiest to grab, but if there are any easier to grab just looking for a Generic Operating system of some kind.Linux, Ubuntu oddly listed as a linux os, Unix operating systems I have heard of, but again just trying to find anything :P

reading around a bit, but windows just seems so limited :/

Will look into both I know the iso works well enough to install ubuntu on a laptop.  with the cd that my computer was not reading.  probably not on the former question though.  Ran into something called YUMI for multiple from an external hoping my computer will read my external.

Are any other disk being recognized on you computer? Maybe your rom drive is bad. You could also try using a live usb installer. Ubuntu should have iso images specifically for usb drives on their site some where.

Edit: if the disk works fine on your labtop then it's not corrupted.
