Dan Den
Ah ok, strange I could have sworn he was against this whole thing in the first place. And wasn't this bill drafted up by a bunch of douche bags who ain't even part of the government.
Dan Den
Actually I just read up on it and it would seem like President Obama had nothing to do with this bill. The SOPA bill was derailed because it required both houses of the U.S. Congress to pass it, and for President Barack Obama to sign it. Once approved, it would have been subject to challenge and could have been changed by future congresses.ACTA, on the other hand, was already signed by the United States on Oct. 11, 2011, and Obama was not required to get the approval of any outside authority to do so: not the Congress, not the Supreme Court, and not the American public. Now that it has been signed, the legislative and judicial branches of the U.S. government also have little ability to challenge or amend the treaty, and Americans would be subject to a whole new scheme of laws, restrictions and regulations that could have them facing fines or jail through a process that would likely exist entirely outside the scope of the American justice system.Source
RikuoAmero
Dan Den, whatever it is you're quoting doesn't know jack shit about the separation of powers in the US. ACTA is a copyright law, and the presidential office has no jurisdiction over copyright; that's Congress's turf. There's a big uproar over this fact, in that Obama (who taught Constitutional law for years, and so, should have known better) did not have the authority to sign ACTA without letting it pass through Congress. It's worse here in Ireland. A single government minister (equivalent to a US Secretary of Whatever) can sign off on it, without having it go through the Oireachtas (Dáil + Seanad, or Parliament + Senate), or get the permission of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister). Dan Den
Damn so basically what your saying is that Obama's side can't do squat about this? You would think they would be concentrating on something of more vital importance rather than trying to use "piracy" as an excuse to gain control of the last know free ground known as the internet.Damn I feel sorry for you man, just goes to show you how well this illusion of democracy works. Alegend1994
I signed this since it comes up on Bakabt when you go onto the site.It sounds like PIPA and SOPA were decoys to take the attention of the world's people away from ACTA, at least for the US.There are definitely more important things that any government could be tackling than something that will make the entertainment industry just that bit more richer. † L4ugh
I'm beginning to wonder if this current push against piracy isn't an attempt by the Democrats to earn themselves some major support from the Hollywood crowd. I'm sure they're well aware of the onslaught that the Republicans and Wall Street crowd are amassing to assure Obama's one term Presidency. Nothing loosens the wallets of Hollywood more then the overwhelming power to sue the piss out of people.
