As many have stated it doesn't matter how big they are, every person can be brought down with the proper technique and timing. And the best self defence of all is if you have the chance and know you can, RTFA (Run The F Away). It may look cowardly but hey you may live to see another day and in my opinion thats a form of self defence.

Also my knee injury I suffered during training has almost healed, can anyone recommend any good ways to strengthen a knee up to prevent another injury?

I agree with running away, in any fighting situation I would prefer to hit them hard and then get away rather than prolonging a fight. And you are correct, running away is a great self defense because you cant be hurt if the people trying to hurt you are far away.

As to your question, throw on a brace, really helps. Also making sure to do small excercises to stretch it out and work it without putting strain on the knee should help, kinda like physiotheraphy

Start with careful stretches and very lightweight lifts with the leg held straight out to strengthen the stabilizer muscles. Then move on to heavier weights and light cardio. Once you get used to that again, you can probably move up closer to your normal routine.

Running away is a very important thing. So endurance running, sprinting, and an obstacle course are also part of my classes. Running can't be a defense if you suck at it.
