what qualities should an anime/manga have?

what do you look for when viewing/reading?

I look for a solid story, something that has been well viewed to cover any plot holes and other little kinks in the story. Also something childish and funny, getting older sucks, and my attitude doesn't seem to change for the better, so I enjoy looking for something that can put a smile on my face.

Initially, it’s very important that there be no (or *very* minimal) bloody annoying screaming/shouting, as that is something I just cannot stand and ruins any ‘seriousness’ to the show’s credibility. I don’t find it funny in the slightest, as I am not into what I call kiddy-crap anime. So I look for this not to be present in the anime I watch, with rare exceptions (Winry/Ed -- Fullmetal Alchemist).

Naturally a serious story is the most important thing for me. I can tolerate a bit of silliness from time to time, which can occur in popular Anime such as Dragon Ball/Z and Naruto for example, but it is forgivable because they have a mostly serious storyline. A show doesn’t have to be excessively violent, but death has to be a real consequence. Otherwise it’s no better than a Bugs Bunny cartoon in my eyes. Hmm, Dragon Balls bring people back to life…but I can let that one slide. ;)
