anyone notice in the fight with orochimaru before the 3rd died he remembers when his teachers told him he was going to become hokage.

the 1st and 2nd were standing in front of him. and he was just a boy at the time.

but in danzo's flash back when he was about to die, he remembers that sarutobi was told he would be hokage during a war, in which only the 2nd was there and sarutobi was about mid or early 20's.

and i havent seen when the 4th was made hokage, maybe thats in the manga or something.

i had always assumed that because he died sealing the 9 tails away, that he was awarded the title hokage.

like when a soldier dies and moves up a few ranks.

(btw who else thought it was cool that in danzo's flash back we get to see the konoha elders when they were young)

Yeah, that is a plot hole. What's even worse is that, early in the series, Jiraiya has flashbacks to when he was a Genin, and Sarutobi, his sensei, looked to be in his late thirties or early forties or so. That would mean that on top of being Hokage (already a full time position), Sarutobi was also a sensei.

According to the Naruto wiki site, Sarutobi was was 68-69 at the time of his death. Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru were 50-51 in Part I (pre-shippuden). They graduated the Academy at age 6 and immediately became part of Team Sarutobi. This meant that Sarutobi was 25 when he became their sensei, although he certainly doesn't look it (there is a big difference in how he looks between between when's appointed Hokage and when he was their sensei)

That's Danzo on the left and Sarutobi on the right. Sarutobi here looks NOTHING like he does below.

As for the 4th Hokage...it wasn't a posthumous promotion. Sarutobi retired and wanted to choose Orochimaru to succeed him, but realised that Orochimaru didn't have the Will of Fire. So he chose Minato Namikaze instead. Minato was Hokage for about a year or so, its never explained exactly how long, but he dies, and Sarutobi comes out of retirement. Amazingly, the way the story is shown to us after the Chunin exams, Sarutobi apparently never bothered selecting another successor. He never had a contingency plan in case he died: even after acknowledging to Anko that he may not be able to beat Orochimaru.

fair point about the 4th hokage, but that is unknown to me. since i approached my thoughts before reading about it.

because mainly watching the anime of naruto they never mention namikaze becoming hokage (YET).

which is odd for a series like naruto to have so many unexplained details, unlike bleach where fillers and sub stories dominate most of the time.

naruto has been consistent on plot, having sub stories that mention the main story or hinder to it.

Consistent? Not Naruto my friend. In fact, I'm gonna make a thread here perhaps tonight or tomorrow morning about all the game breakers, the plot holes that literally, once you stop to think about it, break the plot entirely. Sarutobi not choosing a second successor is just one of them.

im speaking of the main story though, all the flaws and plot wholes are all just what i notice.

like first the story was... naruto just getting stronger to be hokage... then the search and retrieval of sasuke... then find the akatsuki... then its still find sasuke... and so on, you know pretty simple following.

I am dying to find out how the 4th hokage became hokage and died thus leaving the 3rd. It's kind of ironic though?

It's been explored in the manga. Although so far we haven't seen the 4th's coronation, Sarutobi has said that he chose him over Orochimaru because 1) Minato was just that good and 2) Sarutobi didn't trust Orochimaru, knew he would have abused the position.

As for how the 4th died

it was shown a while ago exactly what happened. Kushina was giving birth to Naruto and she was being guarded by ANBU because she was the current Jinchuuriki of the Nine-Tailed Fox. Tobi showed up and held Naruto hostage. Minato was fast enough to grab him and teleport him to safety, but during this brief interval, Tobi had managed to free the Fox and bring it under his control. Minato teleported the Fox away and broke Tobi's control over it. However, the Fox attacked him and Kushina, skewering them with a claw. With the last of their strength, Minato sealed the Fox within Naruto, and both parents left a portion of their spirits within the seal. Then, they died

I think that everyone assumed that Sarutobi was going to be the next Hokage, which is why the First and Second told him while they were training him. This is probably the reason that he was being trained by the Hokages in the first place. Plus, he is apparently from an influential family. The Second selecting him to be Hokage at the time was probably only a shock because they weren't expecting him to die, but in naming a successor, he was essentially admitting defeat. Danzo was shocked though, because he was just a jealous old man...even when he was younger.
