Creating a website?

Ok Me/my family have recently set up as a charity and as such we require a website.

What I want to know is whether it is worth paying up the £500 (this equates to around a bajillion dollars) or making a go of it myself.

What are the risks of the above options?

I'm currently in the process of buying a domain name, but after that I have to make the choice of doing it myself or pay through the nose?

£500 is about $830 last I checked on the going conversion rate. I certainly wouldn't pay that. It may be worth it to some if they were going to make all the content for the site as well, but if it's just the design then surely you can find someone cheaper.

I use Photoshop for designing websites and notepad for coding the design. I use xhtml, html, php, javascript, css, and mysql coding languages for my sites.

For most generic sites you'd be alright with using a pre-built content management system such as Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla which will handle all of the back work of the site for you. All you'd need to do is install a pre-made layout design or have one made for it. The rest will be similar to posting on a forum for making the content when using a content management system so it's really a good idea to use one if you don't know what you're doing well enough to code every bit of the site yourself.

As for domain names, I'd recommend Godaddy. They usually have the cheapest rates with the best reliability and support.

I've bought the domain name SHPR.org.uk for £10

is there a place where I can confirm my purchase? I've got a receipt but is there somewhere I can type the domain name in and it will prove that I own it?

I purchased it from a company called flying pixel in england before you mentioned GoDaddy:( I just want to make sure tis all kosher before I 'proceed'.

Also the company recommended Joomla so I'll probably go with that, cos to be honest I can't pay £500 for a design layout. besides we only need a very rudimentry website.

One more thing. Now that i've bought a domain name do I have to register it as well OR is buying the domain name the same as registering it?

Never heard of .org.uk before and I know of like 30+ domain extensions. o.O

I did a domain look-up and it found nothing on the domain: http://www.whois.net/search-domains/SHPR.org.uk

$16 for a domain name is bit higher than I pay. They raised domain prices everywhere last year and the year before that. The average is around $12 now. It often depends on the domain extension too.

To be honest I've never even tried Joomla so I wouldn't be able to help you with anything related to it. Wordpress is usually my go-to-CMS if I feel like opening the site up to allow staff members to work on it.

As for setting up the domain to work, you'll need to buy hosting somewhere. Once you buy hosting--- your hosting company should display somewhere their DNS domains. You'll have to go to your domain and add the hosts DNS so that it can be linked to your hosting, and then setup the domain on your host side for your account. It can take up to 48 hours for a domain to propagate DNS changes around the world. So you can expect to take a while before you see the domain up and working for your hosting.

okay thanks for your help.

oh, and i'm thinking about using InMotion for web hosting. Does anyone have any opinions on them? Also is it ok that the web hoster is American whilst I live in the UK? I won't cause any regional problems?

Also, Koby, org.uk means that it is a organisation in the United Kingdom. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/

I know what .org.uk means just stating I hadn't seen it before.

Never heard of that host, but I've had terrible experiences with hosts in the past. Stay clear from Site5, 1and1, Godaddy (yeah their domains are the best, but their hosting is terrible), etc.

I know some good ones but they are smaller packages that cost a little more, but more reliable than most hosts. Those would be KwikHosting and OSeHosting.
