Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

I don't know. CLEARLY Counter-Strike was meant for PC's as a result of player customization. (Ahem, to us oldschool players, I'm talking model skins [i.e. guns.player models] and various other client-side visual changes). Not to mention maps created by the players to share with the community work better on PC.

I just don't think console releases for the game will work out well. Iirc, the Xbox release of CS 1.6 was a major flop.

I played the free demo version on xbox; which is probably no doubt a port of it's PC counterpart. I would say no. To me, all it is - is a dated game, re-polished, re-labeled, and re-packaged. Don't get me wrong, Counter-Strike holds a place in my heart forever. There are still people out there that are playing CS 1.6, whom have never bought CS;Source. And then you have those who have never played 1.6, but went on to buy Source. Both are great games, but if you already have either of its predecessors, why buy CS:GO? It's practically the same thing with a different HUD when you're in game, or everything looks more "shiny."

On the PC, arguably I would say you're wasting your money because even on Source, custom skins and maps already take the cake when it comes to that extra polish. Aztec, Train, Italy, Office, Dust 1 & 2? A couple of the basic maps that came with the original 1.6 and Source, are already polished. I noticed in a few of the maps, the layout of the maps were altered, that was it. Same guns, regular default skins that looked even more realistic.

So if you already have Counter-Strike from one point in the past; there's really no need to buy it again imho. I'm not knocking it down or anything and preventing sales, but I play Source. I've played 1.6. You don't need to buy GO if you already have either of the old ones.

I bought it for the 360 and all I can say is that its a truly mediocre shooter. Sure, the PC has mods etc but I feel this game is too entrenched in the past. I'd rather play cod4 for a trip down nostalgia lane.

I doesn't help that the high price has stopped any of my friends from buying it, meaning I have to play with random online douches.

I dunno, its a good game in essence but it just does not feel like a game worth making a big deal about.

All my friends from Steam who pre-ordered CS: GO got a beta before the official release and they have told me that it's no better than CS before GO, so I didn't buy it.

wise friends, it really was not worth it, i can atleast reinforce that point :P

it was.....how should i put this? more arcade-ish? and just kinda pushes you away from it :/
