Kilvor
Okay, first I'm going to ask all of you for your patience because I'm almost positive this topic may cause some people to become quite... irritated, and indignant and cause them to question my love of anime, so my apologies in advance, but I'm honestly curious about what other people think so please bear with me and 'hear' me out.I know this has been argued for a long while now but it seems to me I've been hearing alot more of it recently. Aren't all anime cartoons? Isn't anime just a term that has been applied to cartoons created particularly in Japan? As opposed to, say, America. To the best of my knowledge, and I have no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong ^^, the process of creation is the same. Isn't it all animation? It seems to me that the only differences are in the style, which is different within anime itself anyway, and the origin of creation. My thinking is that all anime are cartoons, but not all cartoons are anime. For example, Avatar - The Last Airbender having been created in America is a cartoon but would not be considered anime. And many other series that we all know and love such as, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, and the Dragon Ball series to name a few, having been created in Japan are cartoons, but are also anime.I realize this is a fine distinction, but distinctions are important to me.This is not meant to incite any anger (so pleeaaase don't be angry with me), but this seems logical to me and I was wondering what all of you think. And again, I'm very sorry if you feel offended but I guess I'm sometimes too curious for my own good ^^'.

TheAlterUser
Well, a lot of people say that anime DIRECTLY comes from Japan ALTHOUGH anime is short for the word animation. Japanese Anime and American cartoons are a type of animation. So in general, it's all kind of the same thing but then again, they're different. Each country just have their own style of drawing. Now as I was saying with the whole "anime coming DIRECTLY from Japan". Okay, yes, whenever someone hears the word "anime", they INSTANTLY think of Japanese Anime. Although, Japan isn't the only country that makes anime. Canada makes a little bit of both anime and cartoons. France makes anime. Germany makes anime. England makes both anime and cartoons. Most of ((if not, ALL)) the Asian countries make anime ((not just Japan)). Most of South America makes anime. Yeah, I think you get the point. Here's a rather good example I think . . . Code Lyoko. Strictly anime. To be more specific, French Anime. It is NOT a cartoon. Which I do think proves that it doesn't need to be created in Japan to be considered as an anime. Avatar The Last Airbender is in fact an Americanized Cartoon. Not Japanese Anime. But as I mentioned, in general, it's a form of animation. And as you kind of said, cartoons in North America are indeed considered to be anime in other countries. And cartoons / anime from other countries would be considered to be the opposite in other countries. But yet again, a lot of people tend to find things differently. This is in fact a rather debatable topic as well as being a very interesting topic. And I do realize Japan is not the only country to produce anime/cartoons it was just the instantly thinking getting in the way I guess. ^^
