While I could see tablets possibly taking over handheld consoles like the PSP or DS in the next five or ten years, they just don't have they power to run at the level of current gen consoles, and even in the case of handhelds I'm not entirely convinced they're a threat. Analysts are getting excited about tablets and smartphones because of the popularity of game apps. The problem is, game apps are not video games in the conventional sense, they have a lower price-point, use less resources, and become obsolete much faster than traditional handheld and console games. They took everyone by surprise because of a surge of users that were not traditional gamers, and enjoyed the simplicity of apps. These users were (mostly) not considered gamers before, and are not interested in traditional games. Likewise, we've seen traditional gamers buy these kinds of games sold as XBL arcade titles or on PSN, but those are closer to traditional games than they are to Angry Birds.

Now, media theory has been predicting absolute media convergence for the hundred years it's been practiced, so it was natural for analysts to get goosebumps when a phone came out that could play games and go online and tell you where to eat lunch. The problem is, what we're actually seeing in gaming is divergence. We do have games incorporated into tablets, but they're not the same as traditional console games and there is no reason to believe that console games will be drawn to tablets. More likely, we'll see a continuing divergence (as we've begun to see) where small, arcade titles on consoles will get bigger and more complex, and those few complex titles on tablets will get smaller and simpler.

I agree with Jenova here, basically. There is NO way that a tablet or smart phone can replace a next-gen console. Those devices are still FAR behind the capabilities of a next-gen console, especially since they aren't nearly as fast or have as many CPU and/or GPU cores. The performance would be MAJORLY lagging, etc. The PS4 and XBOX 720 (current codenames for next Sony and Microsoft consoles) are supposed to be about 2-3 times as powerful as the current PS3 and X360, which would blow all of those tablets and smart phones out of the water with their capabilities. The same can be said about the Wii U.
