Ps3 Problems.

I wasn't sure to post this in the tech center or here, but anyhow.

As of late my old 60gb ps3 has been glitching and certain games have been freezing.

One of the glitchy things it's been doing is this.

102whs0.jpg

Certain icons have a slant/warped look to them. (sorry for the bad pic)

The only games that have froze on me so far are Batman: Arkham Asylum and Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.

The game will freeze and the controller becomes unresponsive, but the music will still be playing fine, I've played other games and they've worked fine.

So does anyone know anything I can do to maybe fix this or is it time to get a new ps3?

Thanks in advance.

Hmm there are a few things you can try

1) try unplugging your system entirely and plugging it back in (so as to give it a reboot)

2) try going back to the systems original settings

3) try your system on a different tv and see if it works that way

4) try a different cable to connect to the tv

5) call sony and see if they know anything

And finally

6) get a new PS3 lol

start backing up data. i'm not sure, but this could be a sign that your gpu is dying. you should back up the saves you care about ASAP. worst case scenario, if it breaks, you either send it in to sony to fix, or sell for parts and use that money towards a slim.

  • 2 weeks later...

Graphical glitchers are caused by the gpu. The the grahpics chip that is on the board.

What is happening is sony using non lead based solder. So when the system gets old and if its used alot the old solder started to crack and become brittle, worse case even briding solder points from the crappy solder melting.

Two options avail.

1. Re-flow. Usually works anywhere from days to 6 months. cost- 30-80

2. Re-ball Most people give it a year warranty some offer life time warrantys on this work.90-130

Re-flow is where they open up your board. Re-move old thermal past. Re-heat the chip so the solder bridges or breaks become round balls of solder again. (basically they are making the solder more brittle but it does work for a while)

Re-ball is where they actually remove the chip. All the old solder. Then they put brand new LEAD solder balls on the bottom of the gpu, then they use a special tool to head the chip up so the new solder balls attatch to the board correctly. This is the only permantly fix the system.

This method works on no image.no sound.Graphical glitches. ylod
