Slice of life anime....... how do you rate them?

I first started watching anime due to DBZ, a shounen. My favourite anime is Code Geass, a mecha. My other favourites include Gundam, mecha, FMAB, fantasy/shounen and Phantom requiem of the phantom which is action/seinen/thriller. However, I've come to realise that I really, really like slice of life anime! Clannad, K-ON, Nana, Genshiken, BECK, Hungry heart wild striker...... the list is endless! Now, mecha will always be my favourite genre but I must admit that slice of life is a very close second. I notice that whilst my top 10 is a mix of genres, my top 20 is very high on slice of life, particularly ones involving school life.

How about everyone else?

Surprisingly, i love them as well, all that high school drama really makes you...nostalgic lmao. Neh, makes you appreciate the present and to rejoice that those days are far behind you. @.@ About a week ago or so i watched Bokura ga Ita and really loved it, watched it in two days, you should check it out. Don't be fooled by synopsis. I even got hooked on OST, it's amazing. From those you listed i only watched Clannad lol, and you know what i think about it *points to her top 5 list*. While we are at it, i really hope you have seen Ouran... >.> Hmm, what more to mention... Oh, School Days definitely, that piece of c*ap you should definitely avoid in large circle.

As someone who lives a relatively simple, boring life with no drama, it's fun to watch slice of life anime and it really is my escape away from the "real world." Stories that are unrealistic like fantasy are fun too but it's also cool to see stories that you can relate more to because it is more realistic.

I think the fact that they are realistic really adds to their appeal. I mean, for a guy, I've been told that I'm quite a sensitive person and I think that's reflected in the shows I watch. I'm not ashamed to admit, I quite like the realistic love stories that some of these slice of life series' show. It appeals to me because I can relate to it. I find myself supporting a certain character to get with the guy or girl and I am drawn by it, especially when it's in a school setting.

I think well done slice-of-life anime tend to be well received because people are more easily able to relate to the characters and themes. The characters are living "normal" lives and the plot lines usually involve only a bit of fantasy which makes it easy to see parallels in your own life. Unlike US movies which involve slice-of-life, these tend to take place in a high school which has a stronger appeal to young adults. I've also noticed that anime that have happy messages or messages about growth/strength along with undertones of life's inconsistency and a bit of cynicism tend to be rated above-average to excellent (assuming all these messages are planted well within the show). Shows like Lucky Star break this mold that I've built, but they're still acceptable since comedies aren't really expected to have deep running motifs and themes.

Put simply, if anime is considered an art medium, and art is defined as a mode of transportation for the artist's ideas/feelings (which depends on the piece), then SoL anime tend to amplify the connection between viewer and artist as long as the viewer is within a certain target audience which is possibly why it can be regarded rather well most of the time.

As for me personally, plot matters a lot in SoL anime. If I'm able to take themes from the plot and apply them to my own life I really rate the anime highly. I'll also rate highly if the anime's able to reveal to me an idea that I was unconscious of or did not know about in life which I can then accept and make my own. A plot that is simply interesting to watch gets an average to slightly above average rating, and a weak plot gets a below average rating. No plot is hard to rate since that's also somewhat interesting, but I don't usually rate those highly.

actually when it comes to slice of life I don't have much experience there, don't know if K-on counts as slice of life. So if any of you guys have a suggestion it would be appreciated greatly :D

K-ON definitely counts :P.

SoL anime I know/heard are good:

Lucky Star

Clannad (I/II)

Haruhi (Season I and the movie, most people don't like season II)

Toradora

Kanon

Air

Gunslinger Girl (may not be considered SoL)

Nichijou (also not sure if this is actually SoL)
