Sister thread about PSP Vita:

http://forums.kametsu.com/showthread.php?t=17791

Hello fellow gamers, I'm sure there are some other people out there keeping their finger on the pulse of E3. One of the most anticipated things expected to be revealed at the event was the sequel to the Wii, one of the most successful consoles in history.

For those that haven't seen it, it looks like this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/25/Wii_u.jpg/250px-Wii_u.jpg

Confirmed details

  • Backwards compatible - With ALL Wii games and peripherals
  • New controller has 6.2" touchscreen as well as traditional button controls (including two analog 'Circle Pads' - analogue sticks to you and me) as well as an accelerometer and gyroscope for more control options, plus, a camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus
  • This new controller only works when wirelessly connected to the console - so no using it like an iPad or other tablet
  • The console will be out in 2012 although nothing more specific than that has been released yet.
  • There is no current pricing information available.

If you want to read/see more information, I'd suggest going to whichever site you use (IGN, gamespot, gametrailers etc) to find out information from their E3 coverage.

As far as I'm aware there have been no actual hardware specifications leaked but everyone (games journalists anyway) is touting it as the most powerful console on the planet.

It also seems to have more "hardcore" gamer support with games including Batman: Arkham City, Ghost Recon Online, an Assassin's Creed game, Darksiders 2, DiRT, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Metro Last Light, Ninja Gaiden 3 having been confirmed for the system.

So, to get to the point, what do you think? I own a very rarely used Wii, and to be completely honest my current feeling towards its successor is one of scepticism at best.

Honestly, this news was the equivalent to realizing that hot girl in that video you were enjoying so much was actually a guy, I was pretty turned off by it, I'm not saying it's a waste if time, but I really wasn't expecting this when I heard "New Console"

When I first saw it I thought, "this looks like a small cheap looking 360" lol but then I saw the controller and was like, "that is one biga$$ controller", its so big in fact that it puts the original xbox's "duke" controller to shame haha. Ive never really taken Nintendos consoles as something for serious games, its all made for fun. When I saw the hide n' seek game which used the controller for the person hiding to keep his position a secret, I'm not gonna lie it looked pretty fun. I was honestly hoping for something with graphics that surpassed the current gen consoles, but thats asking to much of Nintendo lol.

On another note, Starfox 64 on the 3DS= epic win

I read on IGN that the graphics are sub par and are equivalent if not exceeds those of PS3. The hawk demo that everyone saw at E3 was appearently BS it was stupid and didnt' show the consoles full potential. The only thing that has me unamused is the content that they announced alongside it. NO MARIO!! WTF

If they brought all the games they announced for the 3DS for the WII U I would have been sold (Mario Kart, Luigi's Mansion, Star Fox) ugghh

The controller seems to stupid. I mean I get they want to go above and beyond but meh sall good I don't remember if the console was going to be compatible with the classic wiimote cuz thats def something hardcore gamers can use instead of the bulky lightwieght.

the console looks awesome in my opinion, it is getting a good online gaming focus, better game graphics, while still trying to battle the "gaming for everyone" stance that they've always had, and even the head of EA made an appearance for the first time with nintendo for this console and is more than happy to have their games on the console, c'mon that's gotta be saying something.

Nintendo is always trying to bring something new to gaming, it's always a wonder what they come up with these days

Well, I heard mention that in all the talk, only one wii U controller was used at any given time. I would certainly hope that you can use two at once, because that could facilitate some interesting "splitscreen" style gameplay.

Having on-par with PS3 graphics would be good enough for me. I want developers to take their time and design a good game, not just focus on jawdropping graphics.

Also, one other thought. I don't want to be flinging around that controller for gestures! So I'm glad to hear the old wiimotes will work fine! :)

Also, something I thought of when it comes to only being able to use this thing wirelessly. I've got a hunch that the controller has little to no software on it and will be a front end for the software running on the main console. If so, this could mean really good things!

to be honest the wii put me off nintendo games. The gimmick has gone, long gone. They need to make some serious games and get themselves out of this-very profitable- rut they are in. I can't take anymore family friendly games with their stupid fecking adverts with everyone having such copious amounts of 'fun.'

I'm sure it would be possible to have more than one at a time. What we have to remember is that it is still in a prototype stage. The controller may well have changed by the time its actually released. I think the price of the controller will be the biggest problem. Here, in the UK, most shops sell you a motion plus Wiimote and nunchuk for £30 so my estimate for this would beits going to be at least £40; buying multiples of them just wouldn't be practical.

You are absolutely right there :) That is the exact reason why you can only use it when connected to the console - all the processing is done on the main machine.

Nintendo had better sort out the online infrastructure if the are going to be focusing more on online gaming. The Wii's competitive online is shocking and having updated my 3DS with the store the other day that is no better...

The adverts also irritate me. I don't know what they are like in the States but having people like Jedward and Ant & Dec in the UK is just annoying.

On another note, I don't think Nintendo will be the one making 'serious' games as you put it. The majority of their games have always been family friendly - hence famicom and super famicom for NES and SNES - indeed the only franchise I can think of off the top of my head would be Metroid.

Something that always annoys me about people talking about the Wii is that they allocate motion gaming to it. Phones have had gyroscopes in for years and have used them in their game long before the Wii; all it did was use it as a focus point.

thats what I'm saying' date=' they are focusing on it this time, [/quote']

The problem isn't with the focus its about how they implement it. The servers seem either incredibly slow or just don't work whenever I've tried.

It largely doesn't matter to me at the moment anyway, I don't foresee myself getting one for a while. Maybe 2013 or something. I prefer to buy consoles after they have a decent back catalogue. Something I wish I'd done with my 3DS...

Haha did you not see PS3's breakthrough with their move controls for NBA :o lol. it's the exact same format that fifa came out with on the wii lol haha BITERS plus that format blows.

I checked out the deets on WII U and it has a multicore IBM processor, optical drive (lame) 4 usb slots capable of usb external hard drive, sd memory support (I guess to accomodate save games from wii consoles) HD compatible which means 1080p, 108i, 720p........

The only thing I hope they adopt is a trophy/achievement thing cuz honestly speaking it's becoming harder to get myself to complete my wii games cuz im liking the reward I get for completing my PS3 games.

I'm interested in seeing what Nintendo has planned for this new console. I'd really like to see what it's fully capable of. I like the new controller, but it seems like since it's so huge it would be awkward to hold onto and game with it for several hours. I really hope Nintendo fixes their online multiplayer with this new console. The friend code thing gets annoying after awhile.

After awhile? It got annoying after the first 2 exchanges especially since it was required for EVERY game :|

And you got a point they would have adopted the achievement system on the 3DS and cross platform it :( I still hope your wrong lol

Didn't they mention more adult games would be on this console?

I saw an article on slashdot that said that the average gamer age is 37 [slashdot's source]. This really got me thinking. Most younger kids have low attention spans and will often lose interest easily. Older folk that are into games really make it a hobby and thus regularly play and grind and fully complete games. If (unlike what I expected) the average age is that high, then the obvious answer is to appeal to a more adult audience. Appealing to younger generations means churning out content rapidly with enough variety to keep them entertained. So Nintendo, get your big shoes on, make your system easy enough for developers to put their advanced graphics games out on your next console!

But that's just a rant. Truthfully, I am a kid at heart, I want variety and I want interesting and unique uses of gestures and this new tablet! xD

like I said before the head of EA is in full support of this console, and is more than happy to put their games on it, and this is the first time they've done this for nintendo, so I think that means they're moving in the right direction
