Q: About Clannad After Story [Pls. No Spoilers]

Hi everyone! First of all, I'm not really sure if I posted this at the right section since I'm asking for an advice/assistance but I read that section and I found questions regarding technicalities (mostly) so, to be on the safe side, I posted it here in the anime section so here goes:

Is it recommended to watch "Clannad After Story" right after I finished "Clannad"? When I say recommended, I mean does it affect the main story or something or is it like a visual novel with what is going to happen if the main character does this or that (like a choice path)? Please start with a clear definition of "After Story" and if it is possible, no spoilers please or just put the spoiler "thingy" if possible because I am still watching Clannad (I'm only on episode 17).

Clannad- After story

Initially depicting events occurring immediately after those in the first season, the timeline of ~After Story~ extends several years into the future.

That's all I can say with out spoiling the whole thing >.>
