Metaphor: ReFantazio is an upcoming 2024 role-playing video game developed by Studio Zero and published by Atlus. It is the first original game from Studio Zero since its formation in 2016 by Persona series director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro, which is scheduled to be released on 11 October 2024 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

The game explores the themes of ideal and reality and takes place in a medieval fantasy world that is the "mirror" of the contemporary real world, following a non-silent protagonist who sets out on a journey to protect his kingdom while overcoming obstacles and forging bonds with companions he meets along the way.

Metaphor: ReFantazio was first announced under the codename Project Re:Fantasy in December 2016, with no more information revealed until 2023. It derives many of its gameplay mechanics from previously established Atlus role-playing games, such as turn-based combat involving the exploitation of enemy weaknesses, overworld exploration with a calendar system and light social simulation elements, and a mechanic enabling players to develop more intimate relationships with their party members outside of combat.

This is a story of how people must find unity to elect a new king.

Our story takes place in The United Kingdom of Euchronia, where the assassination of the king brings chaos and unrest to the land. Then, one fateful day, a magic known only to the king called the Royal Magic is invoked, and the world becomes embroiled in a royal tournament for the throne.

In the midst of this, the protagonist, together with his partner, the fairy Gallica, must find a way to break the curse that has been placed on the prince that the kingdom believes to be dead. To do so, they depart on a journey across the vast land.

They will discover that in order to achieve their goal, they must participate in the tournament for the throne, and this great task shall require them to ally with many friends and followers of the various tribes inhabiting the world.

Atlus is really going all out with promoting this one. You can tell they really hope this will be a third flag pole for them. Definitely my most hyped for game at the moment. Comes across as a healthy mix of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona but in a fantasy setting. Which is a nice change of pace compared to playing school life characters in a modern age. Really hoping we see more and more fantasy themed turn-based jrpgs going forward.
