Synopsis

In the late 19th century, as the cruel times of the Bakumatsu period came to a close, a new Meiji era marked the age of restoration for Japan. With the war over, its infamous hero Hitokiri Battousai disappeared into thin air, leaving only his legend behind.

Years later, a seemingly plain wanderer named Kenshin Himura encounters Kaoru Kamiya, the owner of a struggling local dojo in Tokyo. Kaoru pursues a self-proclaimed Battousai who roams the streets, indiscriminately killing citizens and police officers. Furthermore, the warrior professes to use the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu—a sword style developed by Kaoru's father deeply rooted in the essence of life, not death.

Kenshin decides to help Kaoru take down the impostor and restore her father's dojo. Unbeknownst to all, Kenshin is none other than the real warrior whose name still terrifies the people. Although Kaoru eventually learns the truth, his oath to atone for his murderous history by bloodlessly protecting the weak moves her, and she welcomes Kenshin to stay at her dojo. However, Kenshin's ideals are soon challenged by ghosts of the past and enemies of the present. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

For those who are unaware, this Anime is a "Remake" as the original anime didn't completely adapt the Manga and had a lot of filler, including an anime-original ending.

The Author , Nobuhiro Watsuki actively took part in the production of this adaptation, and did a few alterations and add-ons.

Thanks to Alexioos95 we've got an excellent ongoing breakdown of skipped, altered, and original content for the new anime which I have listed below.

Episode 01 : Chapter 01.

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • A very short introduction to the legend of Hitokiri Battosai has been skipped at the start of the episode.
    • Through numerous scenes, the funny faces and small gags, as well as the apparent indifference of Kenshin, have been reduced or removed. (Listing them all be way too long.)
    • During the discussion in which Kaoru explains the presence of a dojo full of thugs in the next town, her mentioning its name, "Kihei-kan", and asking herself why Kenshin uses a reversed-blade, has been removed.
  • Altered content :
    • Through a few scenes, the hand the characters use to do certain actions was changed. (Kaoru pointing her bokken at Kenshin, Kihei showing the document to Kaoru, and Gohei holding Kaoru by the collar.)
    • When Kenshin flees from the police with Kaoru, the latter is struggling to break free from Kenshin, and yells to him that Battosai is using the name of her dojo, unlike in the Manga, where she beats Kenshin while explaining to him, before getting knocked out.
    • In her dojo, Kaoru and Kihei are sitting on a cushion in the Manga, but not in this adaptation.
    • The kimono of Kaoru was white with red sakura's petals in the Manga, but completely blue here. Her ribbon was also originally red, not pink. (This redesign is from the Kanzenban edition of the Manga, in which the Author did new drawings for the cover of the Volumes.)
    • Kenshin's distrust of the town's police is shown via his gaze rather than a sentence.
    • When Gohei enters the dojo, he still has his mask on, while he already removed it in the Manga.
    • When Gohei is about to hit Kenshin in the dojo, he holds his katana with only one hand, but he does so with both of his hands in the Manga.
    • Kenshin threatens Kihei by pointing the other side of the blade at him, instead of simply verbally threatening to do so.
  • Anime-original content :
    • The episode starts with a flashback of the Bakumatsu, during which Kenshin was still the Hitokiri Battosai.
This whole scene is an altered and extended version of a few panels of Chapters 48 and 179. (Those alterations were already present for the Tsuioku-hen OVAs.)
    • In the sequence where Kenshin explains what Kenjutsu is, there is a very brief glimpse at the two moments that changed his life, revealed in the Jinchuu Arc.
  • Extra notes :
    • The Opening contains several references to the original Anime, some of its filler episodes, and its first Opening.
    • Teasing about Hitokiri Battosai and the Jinchuu Arc was present in the Opening and the Ending.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : Episode 01, a few seconds of the end of Tsuioku-hen 04.
    • Faithful ? : Events and characters were mildly altered.

Episode 02 : Chapter 02, few pages of 03.

(Yumi's remark about Sojiro being late and Shishio noticing him on a rock, Sojiro asking for the katana's price, and Yumi answering him, Yumi voicing her surprise at the Juupongatana's mention and Sojiro agreement, as well as Sojiro pointing out that Shishio is not truly disappointed.)
    • Toward the end of the episode, during the cliff scene, several new details were added. (Misao's surprise at hearing that Kenshin was once a killer, Eiji bowing to Kenshin, as well as paying a last tribute to his brother, and Misao offering once again a biscuit to Kenshin.)
    • After the ending credit, Tae and Tsubame talking about Sano is an Anime-original dialogue.
  • Extra notes :
    • Many tiny but good details were added during this episode.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : Episode 37.
    • Faithful ? : Yes; Kenshin and Saitô trying to analyze Sojiro mental state, and a flashback about Eiji's brother fighting to protect him, were also added.

Episode 06 : Chapters 72-73.

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • A childish sentence from Sano about how much time he has left for his training was removed.
  • Altered content :
    • At the beginning of the episode, Sano is shown having his bag on his right shoulder, but it was on his left one in the Manga. This leads him to also use his other hand to ask for food to Anji.
    • The funny faces of Sano were almost all slightly toned down.
    • Anji is surprised at Sano suddenly asking him about his technique, but in the Manga, his face was just indifferent.
    • Bubbles of the narrator about the temporality were replaced by silent short textual notes.
    • Sano's hand injuries are much more severe and graphic than what is shown in the Manga.
    • At the end of the episode, Sojiro appears toward the right of Anji, but it was from his left in the Manga.
  • Anime-original content :
    • Sano saying that he'll become stronger after thinking of Saitô is Anime-original.
    • The campfire scenes aside from the first one are all Anime-original, as well as the short sequence where Anji hunts for food.
    • More of Sano's training during the 6th day was shown. His dark circles are also a detail that was not present in the Manga.
    • Sano shown to be his younger self while talking to Captain Sagara is Anime-original.
  • Extra notes :
    • None.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : Episode 38.
    • Faithful ? : Yes. Some additions were also made, such as adding more tension between Sano and Anji at first, or an intermediate sequence about Kaoru and Yahiko in the middle of the episode.

Episode 07 : Chapters 74-75, a few pages of 76.

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • Right before the Opening starts, a sentence from the narrator, about how Kenshin and Misao are both attracting attention, was skipped.
    • At their arrival at the Aoiya, a sentence from Kenshin about how Misao's family must be worried about her, and one of Misao, inviting Kenshin to have dinner with them were skipped.
    • Bubbles of the narrator indicating the temporality of the events were removed.
    • A slapstick scene of Yahiko hitting Kaoru in the head for being pessimistic and one of Misao assaulting Kenshin for trying to sideline her were skipped.
    • After hearing Aoshi's weapon, a thought of Kaoru about Kenshin was skipped.
    • Misao saying that she wished to see Kenshin sleep was removed.
    • A sentence from Seikuu's wife about how Kenshin could have good reasons to come to them was skipped.
  • Altered content :
    • At the start of the episode, Misao pinpoints Kenshin and his katana with her right hand, but it was her left one in the Manga. Later on, we also see Okina using his left hand to walk with his cane, but it was his right one in the Manga.
    • A few scenes were mirrored from their Manga counterparts. (Misao kicking Kenshin, Okina punishing Misao, Yahiko reacting to the girls talking about the dog and Kaoru searching for the restaurant, Misao running to take a bath, Okina doing the peace sign, Okina receiving the news about Shakku, and the entire scene at Shirobeko.)
    • The exterior and interior of the Aoiya and the dog the girls play with were slightly redesigned.
    • In the Manga, the panel showing us how Okina was during his Oniwaban-shu's days represented him using several weapons at once, but not here.
    • Okina is visibly surprised by the news about Shakku, but he was indifferent toward it in the Manga.
    • When Shishio enters his hideout, his men are hitting the ground with their weapons, but in the Manga, they were silent and his subordinate also had no flowers at that time.
  • Anime-original content :
    • The subordinate of Shishio talking about flowers is Anime-original, as he had none in the Manga.
  • Extra notes :
    • None.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : First half of Episode 39, and a few seconds at the end of Episode 40.
    • Faithful ? : Yes, but many small alterations were made to accelerate the pace, such as making Kenshin think about Kyoto instead of the narrator's explanations, or making multiple scenes happen simultaneously, such as Okina receiving the news about Shakku while Misao is trying to wake up Kenshin. Kaoru and Yahiko's situation was also moved to another episode, and received alterations to remove the Shirobeko from that part.

Episode 08 : Chapters 76-78.

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • Houji hitting a wall in protest of sending the Juupongatana to kill Kenshin was removed.
    • Okina putting his hand on Misao's head and saying that she needs to stop has been skipped.
    • A panel in which Seikuu's wife has cold sweats after imagining what Chô would do to her kid has been cut out.
    • Okina quickly analysing the situation of the fight when he arrives at the top of the stairs has been skipped.
  • Altered content :
    • A few scenes were mirrored from their Manga counterparts. (Most of the scenes before the Opening, the start of the discussion of Shishio and Houji in the corridor, and a few parts of the fight between Kenshin and Chô.)
    • Houji's facial expressions received more attention there; in the Manga, he was mostly showing an indifferent face, despite disagreeing with Shishio.
    • Oshige's shop has been very slightly redesigned.
    • A plate has been added on the Torii gate of the temple.
  • Anime-original content :
    • The whole focus on the cup-and-ball is Anime-original. (In the Manga, it was just drawn once, as one of the toys the kid had on the ground.)
  • Extra notes :
    • None.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : Second half of Episode 39, and 5 minutes of Episode 40.
    • Faithful ? : Yes. The few gags were removed, a short scene of Chô showcasing a new katana to Shishio was added, and the two Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu techniques were not said to be ones, though.

Episode 09 : Chapters 79-80, 81 (all but 2 pages).

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • Misao making a remark about Chô rushing toward Kenshin has been skipped.
    • Misao, Seikuu and his wife's shock at hearing from Okina that Kenshin won't use his new katana was removed.
  • Altered content :
    • Numerous scenes were mirrored from their Manga counterparts.
    • When Chô makes a remark on the gaze of Kenshin, he had his right hand on his chin in the Manga, but not here. While walking toward Kenshin, he also still hold his blade with his left hand too, but he had let go of it in the Manga.
    • The altar where the katana rests was largely redesigned.
    • Kenshin's gaze was a lot colder in the Manga, especially after he broke his vow.
    • After rushing to Kenshin to tell him that Chô is not dead, Misao puts her hands on Kenshin's shoulders, but in the Manga, she was holding the top front of his kimono.
    • Okina was drawn without his cane after Chô's defeat in the Manga, but it was rectified here.
  • Anime-original content :
    • Misao expressing her thoughts about the katana of Chô is new.
    • Chô's special techniques following his Orochi are Anime-Original, slightly extending the fight.
    • Chô licking his blade when he makes up his mind to kill Kenshin is a new detail.
    • The episode's closure scene, with Kenshin hiding from the rain with a cat a few years after the end of his Battôsai days, is Anime-original.
  • Extra notes :
    • None.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : 2nd and 3rd quarter of Episode 40.
    • Faithful ? : Yes, but many superficial or useless (parts of) dialogues were skipped, accelerating the pace of the fight before Kenshin receives the new katana. For the climax, a huge effort has been made to iconize Kenshin breaking his vow by adding tension, by showing Kenshin hesitating to attack longer, with his hands shaking, and finally doing a long war cry as he loses himself before dashing forward, on top of showcasing him looking down on Chô after the latter's defeat.

Episode 10 : 25th Anniversary's Extra Chapter, Chapter 81 (2 pages).

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • N/A (Sakabatô Shogeki).
    • Sentences from the narrator, teasing something bad for the start of the next episode was skipped.
  • Altered content :
    • N/A.
  • Anime-original content :
    • N/A.
  • Extra notes :
    • This episode adapts Sakabatô Shogeki, an Extra Chapter created to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Manga. As this chapter never got out of the special exposition it was made for, I'm unable to make a comparison.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : N/A for Sakabatô Shogeki; a few seconds at the 3/4 of Episode 40 for the 2 pages of Chapter 81.
    • Faithful ? : N/A for Sakabatô Shogeki; yes for the 2 pages of Chapter 81.

Episode 11 : Chapters 82-84.

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • After bumping into Kenshin, Misao preparing herself to hit him has been skipped.
    • A short remark of the narrator about Kenshin's reaction to the need to pay Okina has been cut off. Other of his bubbles about Kenshin leaving the Aoi-ya have also been removed, replaced by a notice of temporality.
    • During their time at the Shirobeko, a few sentences from Misao and Yahiko were skipped. (Misao's thoughts about how awkward the situation is, Yahiko's comment on Kenshin's popularity with women, and both's thoughts about Kaoru's outburst.)
    • Hiko's sentences about the signal not concerning him, and later about how he knows what Kenshin thinks were skipped.
  • Altered content :
    • While explaining why he leaves the Aoi-ya, Kenshin has a clear gaze, unlike the Manga, where it was hollow.
    • Some elements were redesigned. (Misao's room, the Shirobeko, and Hiko's house and oven.)
    • Yahiko has his shinai on his right shoulder at the Shirobeko, but it was his left one in the Manga.
    • Kaoru is slightly less emotive than she was shown in the Manga.
    • Many short scenes were mirrored from their Manga counterparts.
    • As Hiko lectures Kenshin, his gaze is a lot softer than in the Manga, where it was full of anger and contempt. Kenshin was a little bit shocked too, unlike there.
  • Anime-original content :
    • Hiko breaking one of the bottles of sake is an Anime-original detail.
  • Extra notes :
    • For the chapter of his first appearance, Hiko Seijuro's cape is drawn with a much more traditional, short and folded collar, although a bit long. This collar was drawn inconsistently for a few chapters, and becomes larger over time. This Anime uses the redesign of the Kanzenban edition, with an even larger and grandiose collar.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : Remaining few minutes of Episode 40, first half, minus a few minutes in the middle, of Episode 41
    • Faithful ? : Yes, but changes were made to skip most dialogues to have a faster pace, such as making Okina having the location of Hiko beforehand, or changing Misao and Kaoru's encounter, by removing the Shirobeko from the equation. A parallel was also added between Misao and Kaoru's situations, Kaoru's emotions were accentuated, and content of the next chapter was brought forward.

Episode 12 : Chapters 85-87.

Spoiler
  • Skipped content :
    • Hiko cornering Kenshin into getting water was very slightly toned down by removing a sentence about how Kenshin can't expect kids to pass the night without water.
    • A gag, about Hiko correcting himself, stating that there is no way Kenshin could nearly even be as strong as him was skipped.
    • Yahiko mentioning Aoshi as the crazy guy here to kill Kenshin was removed.
    • Osamu asking Okina if he knows the girls visiting him was skipped.
    • Sojiro's mention of Aoshi's failed negotiations with Okina was cut.
    • The narrator's notes about the location of Shishio's hideout, Sojiro guiding Aoshi inside, and Hoji knocking on the doors were skipped.
    • At the end of the episode, a sentence from one of the women of the Aoi-ya about the bad weather, and the narrator's notes about the upcoming danger approaching were removed.
  • Altered content :
    • In the Manga, Kenshin leaves Hiko's house to get water without taking a bucket, but is suddenly drawn with two a few panels later. This mistake was fixed here.
    • A few scenes were mirrored from their Manga counterparts, primarily during the scene at Hiko's house.
    • Yahiko and Misao directly let Kaoru explain why she went to Hiko's house, but in the Manga, they first say that they accompanied Kaoru there, using spoons as microphones. Their stunned faces at hearing Kaoru talk were also removed.
    • Hiko saying that he should be the one affronting Shishio, but that it's too bothersome, wasn't treated particularly there, whereas it was a gag in the Manga.
    • Yahiko and Misao were crossing their arms together when saying that Kenshin had nothing to worry about in the Manga, but are simply shown with their fist raised there.
    • Okina ordering and receiving his tea during his meeting with Aoshi was done off-screen, but he's shown lit his pipe on-screen instead.
    • Hoji is completely stunned by Shishio's technique and isn't able to express himself, but was still able to voice out his surprise in the Manga.
  • Anime-original content :
    • Kaoru's reaction to Kenshin declaring that he can't let people suffer without helping them is an Anime-original detail.
    • The notice of temporality for the meeting of Aoshi and Okina is new.
    • Okina's mention of Misao's feelings when he's warning Aoshi that he'll kill him is Anime-original.
  • Extra notes :
    • None.
  • 1996 Anime :
    • Equivalent : A few minutes of the first half of Episode 41, its entire second half, and the first quarter of Episode 42.
    • Faithful ? : Yes, but an instance of censorship was made, by replacing the corpse Shishio cuts in half by meats. The meeting between Aoshi and Okina was also slightly brought forward, and Kaoru explaining what happened to Aoshi was done on-screen.
