Arian
I know. two times in one day, but here goes. I'm considering buying the Elgato Game Capture HD. I've used it before and it does work for game consoles. But if I'm going to spend the type of money it costs, I'd also like to be able to record stuff off of my cable tv box. My question is, with only an HDMI Out slot in the cable box, and with the help of a splitter, would I be able to record off of the cable box via HDMI to the Game Capture? FMA1394
HDMI on cable boxes usually have DRM. You need a decryption module like HD Fury. Arian
It's cool, man. I know I need to decrypt it, and I'm getting something for that, but I just want to know if HDMI out on a cable box will work in general, let's just say there's no encryption. It'd be good to know if someone has done this, then I would know if it would work. http://www.ebay.com/itm/181401410782?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Shadow Links
I have one. Love that thing. Works great for game consoles and takes any input (HDMI/Component/Composite/S-video) and then outputs HDMI back to the TV with no lag. The only console it has an issue with HDMI is the PS3 due to HDCP, so it uses a cable that is included. You can get rid of HDCP with some splitters though. (known example) So as long as the cable box does not have HDCP, you are set without a splitter. You just need an extra HDMI cable. Ranma-kun
I opted for a Roxio HD Pro instead because it has both HDMI and component. If your capping off PS3 you have to do it through component.
Arian
The Elgato device has component as well.
Ranma-kun
Oh I didn't know that maybe it was a different one I was thinking of.
Arian
But thanks anyway, Ranma.
Ranma-kun
TV channels vary most of them I can record through HDMI but like HBO and some of the other premium channels you will get a blocked message and have to switch it to component. (I have directv btw)
Arian
But do you use a splitter?
Ranma-kun
I don't need one, the awesome thing about Directv is that you can watch in HDMI on your tv and record through component to the capture device at the same time without having to use the passthrough. I have to use the passthrough though for games though so I can play/record at the same time.
Arian
Yeah, but Component is only 1080i, while HDMI is capable of 1080p and beyond.
Ranma-kun
Television only broadcasts at 1080i in the United States I am not sure about Canada.
Arian
Can component record Dolby Digital sound? Because I know HDMI can.
Ranma-kun
It can only record 2.0 stereo because it uses red and white a/v cables.
Arian
Okay, so you mentioned that HBO has an HDCP block. I found a splitter that's supposed to negate that. I'm getting it so that I can record Xbox video. What do you think about that?
Shadow Links
Sounds good. All you need to do now is decide on what program to use. The Game Capture HD software does the basics and some editing like cutting out segments of video, and a little more, although you might want to look at XSplit or OBS as well
