Dae314
Thanks John. Hasn't been updated in a while though because I was busy last month and I'm waiting for some more reviews to come in now from the latest convention. Intel's Devil's Canyon just got announced, so on the Intel line those processors would be the "latest and greatest." Here's some articles: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/06/09/intel_devils_canyon_good_bad_ugly#.U5fY3dww8RQ http://www.anandtech.com/show/8079/intel-launches-devils-canyon-and-overclockable-pentium-i74790k-i54690k-and-g3258 If you want to go uber high end you might as well wait for Haswell-E http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/intel_haswell_e_has_8_coresx99_chipsetddr4_memory.html If you're thinking more along the lines of AMD's APUs, Kaveri is where you want to look: http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2014/2014060601_AND_reveals_specs_of_new_desktop_APUs.html As for a motherboard... read the guide. You'll usually pick your motherboard after you pick the CPU you want. I'm not sure how patient you are for graphics cards. Usually the lines are refreshed in the late summer time so it's probably best to wait. Otherwise, AMD is giving pretty good bang for buck right now. ZeroPenguins
Or you could buy one of the i7s from here http://www.msi.com/support/mb/H61MP31_G3.html#support-cpu and also upgrade your GPU to something better like an Nvidia GTX 770 or AMD's 280X or something. DrumRoll
thanks guys. I'm looking at possibly going for this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-xeon-e3-1245-s1155-quad-core-33ghz-5-gt-s-dmi-8mb-cache-33x-ratio-95w-retail and this ;http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-msi-radeon-r9-280x-gaming-3g-twin-frozr-oc-28nm-6000mhz-gddr5-gpu-1000mhz-boost-1050mhz-2048-str would this be ok for my Corsair 430watt psu? also would my cheap ass motherboard be ok? thanks again:)
Dae314
Ahahahaha--erm... Probably not you're going to be cutting it close. 600W is preferable but 550W might work if your other components aren't very power hungry.
DrumRoll
Ok guys one last question. If I upgrade my Motherboard will this allow me to buy a better cpu for less? As for the current MB I have a 3.3ghz cpu is £200. Or is that about right? I'm pretty ignorant of these things.
Dae314
Ya you probably want a motherboard with an updated chipset unless you're going to just get an i3.
ZeroPenguins
No, don't know why you're telling him to get a new MOBO if he doesn't need more features. You're gonna make him waste an extra $100-200 dollars for no good reason. If you look at his MOBO CPU support list which I linked, his motherboard supports 3rd gen Ivy Bridge CPUs also 2nd gen Sandy Bridge CPUs which is fine for what he needs it for. Going from a Pentium to a i5 or i7 is gonna remove all the bottlenecks he has. Going to a 4th gen Intel CPU is just a waste of money,
