How do you make transparancy in GIMP? [Answered]

You don't even need to resave it as a png.

Open your image in gimp then right click on the layer (right side) and choose Add Alpha Channel (on the bottom). Now when you erase stuff you'll see the checkerboard pattern (transparency) instead of white. When you export your image, you'll need to save it as a png or some other compression that supports transparency or it'll turn all your transparent portions white again.

Why this works:

GIMP doesn't make edits right on top of the file you're working on. It reads the compressed picture file at load and handles everything in memory. It's only when you export that gimp stuffs your image down whatever compression algorithm. Alpha channel on your layer is just not enabled by default.
