computer not recognising speakers or headphones

Hi everyone

 

I recently built a computer for my brother. I first connected it to the tv via an hdmi cable and everything was fine. But when I then plugged it into a monitor and speakers the computer refuses to acknowledge anything plugged into any of the audio jacks (green, red or blue. Or headphones in the front.)

 

I have done all the basic things like setting it to default etc etc and updated the drivers. I have also gone into bios to make sure the integrated soundcard was enabled.

 

so.....any ideas? I get sound through the hdmi but not through any of the jacks. I have also tried removing the graphics card but to no avail.

 

 

The computer is:

 

fractal design case 1000-black pearl

msi-H61M (G3) motherboard

intel G645 cpu

radeon 7700 gpu

windows 7 home premuim.

Just to confirm:

• You have enabled HD-Audio (may be called 'onboard soundcard') in the BIOS;
• you have connected the speakers to the lime green port on the motherboards audio I/O connector;
• You have checked the audio driver required is Realtek (most, if not all recent motherboards use Realtek), and have downloaded the latest from Realtek's download page;
• You have confirmed that your 'Speakers' are selected as default playback devices:
• You have confirmed that 'Volume Mixer' is using your desired output (i.e. Speakers):

Lastly, reboot to make sure the changes are complete~

unfortunately I have tried all these:( The volume icon has a red x over it even when i plug speakers in. I may try buying a pair of usb speakers to see it that works cos I can't be arsed with this riddle at the moment

Hmm why does the icon have a big X over it? Seems like your integrated is not working at all. Have you tried the back panel? Usually when the front panel speaker and mic connections don't work it's due to the fact you didn't connect the audio cable on the motherboard in correctly.

what would the audio cable look like?

 

just to clarify I have tried plugging speakers in the back and headphones in the front port. But perhaps some part of the motherboard is not receiving power.....I didn't managed to plug the 24pin wire in until it 'clicked' becuase I didn't want to risk breaking the MB. 

 

 

all relevant drivers are up to date, they just can't see anything even in the ports BUT sound comes through the graphic card hdmi just fine. The only driver i was unable to do was the 'SM bus controller' would that be causing the fault?

The 24 pin ATX cable should be firmly set. It doesn't have to make the clicking noise, but the little lock on the side should be nicely fitted around the connector on the motherboard. You should not be able to pull it off easily.

You also need an 8 pin cable to connect somewhere near the CPU. Most (all?) motherboards wont boot without this so I assume you have got it plugged in.

Go to Intel's driver update utility if you think it's drivers.

Again, just to confirm where you are plugging the speakers in:

The lime green port, yes?

yes. I have it plugged into the lime green one, although I have checked all the other ports to ensure it wasn't a fault.

 

I have checked the motherboard, plugged and unplugged everything but still no luck:( Do you think perhaps it is the motherboard itself?

 

I'll give the intel website a go. It would be great if it were something so simple...

Do you have all the devices with their driver installed in the windows device manager? It's strange that if you have the driver installed and the speakers connected a red cross appears

If all else fails, get that live CD you made for the last issue and test sound that way.

I used Ubuntu. It supports my onboard soundcard (HD Audio) and my Xonar STX out of the box since 11.10.

I agree with what John said. Good idea to see whether it's a hardware or software side issue using a linux live distro. If it's software sided, then you probably need to find the correct drivers. Maybe off the motherboard site.

I thought I'd just come back and say that the problem WAS my motherboard. Replaced it and everything works fine, that'll teach me to buy something so vital off ebay:)

 

on a minus note both my monitors are breaking:( One is completely worn out and keeps turning itself off. The other was pissed on by one of out dogs when it was on the floor and the uhhh liquid has managed to get beneath the screen and damage it. FUCK. I use a monitor to play my 360 on and I go GTA a few days ago:( looks like I have to spend more money I don't actually have.

Sadly not the first time I've heard of the dog pee thing. Seen it happen to a few towers (one time right through the vent slats).

 

If you were only ever using the front panel of the tower for the sound then it may have very well been the connection between the mobo to the tower's front panel. You just need to make sure the cable from the front panel is properly connected to the mobo (generally labeled F_Audio). Just a thing for the future, glad you got it working though with this new mobo.

 

You should try to keep an eye out for deals on monitors. I got a brand new LED 21" LG for $110. Just have to be persistant and check a lot of places if you're on a budget.
