Surprising amount of RPGs this year. I look forward to TGS in September (19th-22nd) to find more new J-RPGs being announced. I'm not so into shooters so a lot of the bigger stuff (Destiny, Titanfall, Halo, Battlefield 4, Call Of Duty: Ghosts) doesn't really interest me. I'm not so fussed about things like Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham Origins or Dragon Age: Inquisition myself as I've not played the first games.

Assassin's Creed, for me at least, is one of those games that is more fun to watch than to play. The same can be said for Batman to be fair.

What I learned from all this is that when I buy a new TV next month, make sure it has four HDMI ports as I'm going to need them. Current one only has two so I'd need a splitter.

Still seems very little in terms of Vita really too. Sony seemed to focus almost exclusively on PS4. Not like I bought one anyway, but still.

Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III were enough to satisfy me this year obviously. lol.

I plan on getting Lightning Returns/XIII-3 as well because I want closure for the series.

I am absolutely getting Lightning Returns.  But not for closure for the series, because I doubt that happens. lol.

If anything, I just imagine the end of the first XIII as the closure part and the last 2 games are side stories or "what-ifs" haha

I just look on FF9 as closure for the series, lol. 10 was decent, 12 was average, didn't like the combat, 13 was worse, 13-2 a (slight) improvement on 13. Haven't played the MMO, have no interest.

I think CardGames meant closure for the "13 series" not the entire FF series as a whole.

But yeah.  Its been many years since I have played 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12.  I plan on replaying them all in the future.  It has only been recently (the past few years) that I have really started appreciating a good story  in games, which is why I need to replay those in order to refresh my memory and actually enjoy them for what they are; rather then just playing them to beat them like I used to.

I liked 12! A lot! Enough to spend hundreds of hours on it! The love subplot took a backseat (like... waaaaay in the back) to the main story, which was a nice change of pace. And I thought the battle system was fun.

I didn't even know the Vita still existed. If it wasn't for Dangan Ronpa, I think I would have forgotten the PSP existed at all, honestly.

That's pretty much what I meant.

XIII-2 had a sad ending. I'm hoping XIII-3/Lightning Returns fixes that.

Yeah, I knew what CardGames was meaning, was just being sarcastic really. Serious to a degree too. Here are my views on the FF series:

1 - Not as good as Phantasy Star 1 which was released earlier. Phantasy Star had a better plot.

2 - Interestingly experimental. Still no real story though.

3 - Story driven. No real surprises. Worth a punt on DS now it's cheap.

4 - We're getting somewhere. Good challenge, good love story (best in series?) between Cecil and Rosa.

5 - Too many years since I've played it. Exdeath was interesting as principle - started as a tree :-s

6 - Good as well. Kefka is the best villain IMO.

7 - Good but overrated. Contrived story. Cloud Vs. Sephiroph rivalry is decent.

8 - Never completed 100%. Combat is dodgy/broken. Too easy.

9 - My favourite. I like the skill learning system. Probably why I like Lost Odyssey too. Zidane and Garnet have best love story imo. Ending is superb. Reminds me of Aladdin.

10 - Decent. Some annoying characters. (Waka, Tidus mainly). Too linear - people complained about FF13 while fondly remembering 10 for some reason. It was just as bad, if not worse for linearity.

12 - Never completed 100%. Couldn't get along with the battle system. AI was poor in some boss fights. License Board was interesting concept.

13 - Too linear. Annoying characters - Vanille, Hope. Hated how Hope got Alexander who is the best summon. Bahamut a close second. Hated gestalt mode.

13-2 - Not completed yet. Serah is annoying, as is the time hopping chocobo lady. Hate what they've done to moogles. Better though. Time travelling is one of my favourite themes. Should have left the encounter system from 13 though. Random encounters suck.

My top three Final Fantasy games:

1 - Final Fantasy IX (9)

2 - Final Fantasy IV (4)

3 - Final Fantasy VI (6)

My top three Final Fantasy love stories:

1 - Final Fantasy IX (9)

2 - Final Fantasy IV (4) Close this time

3 - Final Fantasy X (10)

My top three Final Fantasy villains:

1 - Kefka (Final Fantasy XI (6))

2 - Sephiroph (Final Fantasy VII (7))

3 - Exdeath (Final Fantasy VI (5))

I liked 12!

I just never got on with the battle system. As much as I love Ni No Kuni's world, I have the same problems with it's AI. Mages burn MP far too quickly even when on 'Focus On Healing' or what have you. They run into danger too quickly. I just got too pissed off with it. I still have the game though. Maybe one day I'll try it again.

In the interest of full disclosure, my top 10 RPGs of all time are:

1 - Dragon Quest VII (7)

2 - Final Fantasy IX (9)

3 - Chrono Trigger

4 - Ni No Kuni

5 - Lost Odyssey

6 - Tales Of Vesperia

7 - Final Fantasy VI (6)

8 - Persona 4

9 - Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1&2

10 - Etrian Odyssey

Special mentions: Valkryia Chronicles, Dark Cloud, Breath Of Fire 1 or 2, early Pokemon games (pre D/P), Skyrim, Fallout 3 - GOTY, Atellier Iris games.

Note: Although these are numbered, aside from the top three, the rest could happily go in any order.

Just about everything you said there was amazing lol.  A LOT of thought went into those opinions I can see.  I haven't played all of the FF series so I can't compare.  But the way you are building up FF9, I now really want to play it.  haha

I have played A LOT of RPGs lol. They're pretty much all I play, other than FIFA and the odd racing game, nothing much piques my interest.

I've played all the main FF games, not the MMOs, all the DragonQuests, all the (older) Phantasy Star games, all the Breath Of Fire games, most of Shin Megami Tensei games, I own all the Tales of... games released in the West, then there are other things like Alundra, Grandia, Skies Of Arcadia, Vagrant Story, Suikoden games, Lunar, Secret Of Mana, Metal Walker, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Xross, some of the Atellier games Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, The Last Remnant, Nier, Infinite Undiscovery, Ni No Kuni, Ys games, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Resonance Of Fate, Enchanted Arms.  That's just the J-RPGs I can remember playing.

I've played less Western RPGs but they've only grown in prominence in recent years. In terms of them I've played Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Baldur's Gate 2, Sacred 2, Kingdom Of Amalur: Reckoning, Two Worlds 1 & 2, Dungeon Siege 3, Too Human, Torchlight 1 & 2, Arcania games, Gothic games, SpellForce games, Risen 1.

MMORPGs I've played is a much smaller list. RuneScape, World Of Warcraft, Runes Of Magic, Earth Eternal, RIFT, in that order.

I've played a load of XBLA or Indie ones too but the only names I can remember for that is Constume Quest, Castle Crashers, DeathSpank games, Penny Arcade 1 & 2,

There are things I haven't played though. I've never played any of the Ultima games, Wizardry games and

I still want to play the rest of the Atellier games, The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, Dark Chronicle, Rogue Galaxy, Shadow Hearts, Dark Souls 2, The Witcher 3 - jumping on those two late I know -

There's so much to play, so little time these days.

EDIT: On the subject at hand rather than that waffle, FF9 has been on the PSN since 2010, as have 7 and 8. They're probably about $10-15 now. Don't know the exact price for you but I think they cost me £8 each when I bought them.

AH! I should have grabbed it when Square did the 50% off sale a few months back when I grabbed 7 and 8! dang it!

Even at $15 or even $20 it's cheap compared to buying a physical copy. Most people have the same favourite when it comes to FF. It's usually something from 7 to 10, depending on how old they are. For a lot of people, not all, it is the first one they played. You will get the odd person who really liked 12 as well, although whether they consider it  favourite or not I wouldn't know. They're usually just there when someone slates it, like above ^.^

I can't imagine the twelve or thirteen year olds of this generation are going to be looking back in fondness about 13 or 13-2 to be honest. Certainly wouldn't be my favourite but you try getting them to play a game with sprites rather than polygons.

NB - I've tried with four, only got one to go for it. Not only is she now my favourite cousin but she also likes older games and anime - all because of me. She went to a convention last year cosplaying as Garnet from FF9. I was so proud  :confident:

I couldn't rank the games I like even if I wanted to try, haha. They all scratch a different itch for me and I enjoy them for what they are.

I enjoyed most of the earlier FF games, but I really fell off after FF7.  I didn't play much of FF8 because I couldn't be bothered to care; I didn't play FF9 at all because I don't know; didn't play the MMOs; and I didn't play FF13 because it takes me eight thousand years to buy new games these days. I'm pretty sure FF12 was one of the last games my dad bought for me before I left home.

Fake Edit: I apparently care so little about FF10 that I skipped it. To be honest, I think this one might be up my alley, I've just been skipping it because I don't care.

I can't say I find much joy in "converting" people, mostly because I hate it when people try to convert me. It's one thing to express your interest and enjoyment of a thing, but another to tell people they're wrong/missing out/stupid for liking or not liking it.

Like I'll get people telling me, "I can't believe you don't play blahblah game, you play this game so you would totally like it and you should play it". The more they tell me to like it, the more anxious I get and I end up feeling obligated. It makes me hate the game even before I load it up.

And I do this with pretty much everything--books, movies, TV shows. I'll do it because I'm annoyed with people telling me to consume it, but then I end so annoyed that I literally can't enjoy it. It's not a hatred of popular things, it just so happens that when a thing is popular, there are more people who are telling me that I should also enjoy the thing.

One or two unsolicited recs are fine, long as you don't force my hand--sitting down and saying, "OKAY WE ARE NOW GOING TO WATCH GAME OF THRONES BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT" is a good way of getting me to vacate the room. Force me to stay and I transform into a person incapable of watching things silently.

Yeah I totally agree. I'm not much of a movie watcher but I've got friends that love them. They're obsessed with getting me to watch a lot of the Marvel stuff. I do like Game Of Thrones though.

People definitely have to accept what you like and not try to force their stuff on you. That happens too much in life, hell we put up with it everyday in adverts, we don't need our friends and family doing it as well.

It's guaranteed to make you cynical about what they're telling you, as you said.

Just for the record though, I didn't force my cousin to play the games or watch the anime. I was playing FF9 on my PS3 and she liked a certain bit, I forget which now and then asked me about the game. She was surprised when I said it was Final Fantasy because She's only fifteen - fourteen at the time - so she doesn't really remember before PS3 - Her parents wouldn't let her play games until secondary school.

As for anime, I was watching Rosario + Vampire and she liked the school uniform. She watches mostly that sort of thing, big fan of K-On, Fruits Basket, Puella Magi and anything Ghibli. At the minute I'm trying to get her into more than just slice of life shows. I started with Spice & Wolf because I knew she'd like Holo, but it has more serious themes than a lot of the other stuff she liked. She enjoyed the first few episodes. Go me.

Lol. I think you have to be open minded to try things out. Some times I'll watch an episode of something and not like it particularly so I'll stop watching it. At least I tried it though.

I know some of that is contradictory but meh, deal with it, lol.

By pure accident I got my niece into anime and games as well.  Just because I played some games and watched anime when I was babysitting her and now shes obsessed with them.  I feel kind of bad though because she just bought a $30 japanese doll from ebay for her birthday.  She's taking it to a whole different level than me lol.

People are contradictory in general, haha. NBD. ouo

I am pretty open to trying new things as long as I can do it at my own pace and of my own volition. Like if I don't know a thing people are talking about (which is 150% of the time), I will Google it to see what it's about. I just don't like people trying to shove it down my throat or make me do stuff. It's a fine line between "Hey, you should check out Madoka" and "We are watching Madoka tonight because you've never seen it".

I watched Samurai Champloo and Ergo Proxy after some egging, and I hated every minute of it. The more I watched, the angrier I got. By the time I finished, I was so disgusted I couldn't move on fast enough, haha.

I don't have that kind of patience with video games, though, especially not these days. If my hand is being forced to play a game, I'll do everything I can to avoid it. At best I'll watch an LP, which gives me more opportunity to rage about how terrible a particular LPer is.

Yeah, I've never been into the whole dolls/plushies side of it. I don't collect anything other than games and anime. I don't have enough room to start buying little figures - like Nendoroids - from all the shows I like, even if the Kurisu Makise one looked awesome...

At the moment I have two shelves for all of my anime, DVDs (mostly stand-up comedy, some series and games. I have about half a shelf left now. That's why I gave up on buying the really long shows (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc) as I just wouldn't have room for them.

Oh, yeah, I understand completely. No one has ever quite done that to me though lol, they've just bitched when I've said I don't want to watch something. I'm usually pretty diplomatic about it and say something like, "I'll get round to it". That usually shuts them up because I've accepted what they've said. Never going to act on it though, just gets them off my back.

I watched Samurai Champloo. Was okay but the ending was complete shit. I watched two episodes of Ergo Proxy and got bored so I gave up with that.

I bet Attack On Titan is your latest one, eh? People are bound to be telling you to watch that all the time. For what it's worth it is a good show.

I know, right! I was watching one a while ago when I was playing Darksiders and the guy just wandered around for ages. I'm there screaming at the screen. The most annoying thing was after he figured out the easy bit he did the part I was struggling on straight away. I didn't know who was stupider lol.

He sounded like Todd Haberkorn as well, which was amusing.

SNK hasn't been pushed on me (yet), although I see a lot of it on my dash. From videos set to the OP music to photos of Japanese schoolchildren pretending to be titans to fan art and edited screenshots. It's on my dash all day every day. It doesn't really seem like it's up my alley, but I don't mind its existence. Although, I did get into Dangan Ronpa because it was on my dash a lot, so maybe one day I'll get around to it, haha.

I've moved a lot, so collecting things means having to move more crap, but I do like to have toys/plushes. I have little Hamtaro toys in front of my monitor right now, haha.

Well, follks, if you ever thought you didn't have any power as consumers, this proves us all wrong. It would seem the incredibly harsh reaction to the Xbox One from the public - and some journalists - has prompted a complete and utter u-turn from Microsoft.

Don Mattrick released a statement on the Xbox Website which is copied here for your perusal:

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console — there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.
